Is there any scans of the images from that magazine? I'd love to see those.

I only know them from memory, never seen scans online that I can remember. One stage was like carnival fun house IIRC. I might have a look around and see what I can find.

Wonder if an incomplete rev of the game is floating around somewhere?

    EDIT: Check this out bro:

Damn, OverDrone, I've never heard about that before but it looks really interesting.
I'm also one of those who played it to death prior to any Street Fighter II hype. I loved this game back in the days.

According to the article it was 75% complete. I wonder how much truth there is to that.

Holy shit, those new characters are actually from Guardians of the 'Hood! Even the intro screens are reused assets from that game!

Man, there has to be a Rom floating around. Got to find a way to get a hold of Gary, the lead designer... I freaking love Pit fighter on the MD... It might be one of my favorite games in the library. Isn't one of the members here a Pit Fighter speed run player?

Pit-Fighter was the sh*t back in the day! The gameplay may have been a little rought around the edges but it was a good distraction when you had your fill of other arcade games.

Good to see Pit-Fighter getting some love around here as I don't remember the game getting much respect even in it's day and it really hasn't aged too well. Me and my mates would play it a lot as kids and to be honest I still get a laugh out of it's cheesy characters, gimp masks, mindless violence and little to no storyline. "Just wait!"

Yeah, I am a staunch supporter of Pit Fighter. I think it's a legitimately great game, and it's a great at port in regards to keeping the arcade feel of the game. It's really dynamic too, you can really play however you want. you can just play it like a silly arena brawler, or you can explore the mechanics and learn all the crazy nuances the engine allows you to take advantage of. it's just an absurdly fun game, but it has great elements of design going on that are hidden under the base arcade mechanics.

PROS: Controls, Combos, Moves and Fun Factor of the Arcades!
CONS: The graphics is very poor posterized
A very poor port but WAY BETTER than the SNES version

Still awesome for a 8meg cart!

They did a great job within the 8mb limit they had. It kept a vast majority of what defined the games look and gameplay. I think is a damn fine port.

There are two things why I think most people dislike this game: Poor color usage and poor digital spritework. Combined, it makes for a unattractive game. Having said that, I wonder if Pyron or Barone is able to apply a color hacks to this game? it would make for a very intersting project to say the least!

Not a 'very poor port' by any means. Aside from the scaling obviously being removed, it's very accurate. More so taking into consideration the 8 Meg cart.

The SNES port was typical THQ quality from BITD, it misses a ton of content and fucks over the controls to boot.

Was there a story about the SNES port being an early beta build that was rushed out prematurely, or am I just remembering somebody's speculation?

It certainly seems unfinished, and it wouldn't be the first time a company released a beta for whatever reason -- there are a couple Jaguar games where that was the case.

BTW my first copy of Genesis Pit Fighter was one of the only dead Genesis carts I've ever run across. Fortunately, I didn't pay much for it, and just used it as the shell for my EverDrive. And now I have a working copy.

I haven't heard anything but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. On the same token we probably shouldn't underestimate just how incompetent THQ actually was back then.

I've played it safe and picked up the JP versions of the various Tengen games in the hope they use a better PCB, stories of dead Grindstormer carts got me too worried. I do have US Paperboy, but that's dirt cheap anyway.

So far the only MD/Genesis cart that's died on me was an Undeadline. Yeah, ouch
