Default Maximum Carnage, Anyone have comments?

I was thinking about getting this game, i have some posters that hype it, and I remember it being hyped when I was a kid.

    is it any good?

I've heard nothing but praise about it. It supposedly handles the comic translation pretty well, and isn't highly innovative, but really fun. I'm in the market for a copy myself.

Bought the SNES version back when it was initially released in 1994, and thought it was pretty good. I did tire of it after a short while, though, but it's still an interesting (and tough) beat-em-up.

Well I don't have any beat 'em ups. Hmm this may be a good choice to add that genre to my small collection.

The Hype was waaaaaaay overdone, and the game suffered for it critically. The graphics are mediocre, levels repetitive, and too tough for its own good. The lack of a 2-player mode especially hurts.

To it's credit, there are some nifty gameplay features stemming from Spidey's web abilities and wall crawling. Also, the control is pretty tight and pulling off moves is easy.

Green Jelly does the soundtrack, but it is completely non-memorable.

There is a sequel called Separation Anxiety which is pretty much the same exact game...

Worth $5-$8, and nowhere near the level of SoR or TMNT.

The game is very, very repetive. Even for a beat em up.

In my humble opinion, it stinks. I would recommend the Streets of Rage titles instead, and I'm sure the others will back me up on this.

I like the game, but as has already been said, the lack of a 2-player mode is really a detractor. I rented the SNES version back when the game was originally released and wasn't impressed at all, but a month or so ago found a complete Genesis copy for $5 (Canadian, might I add) and to my surprise I enjoyed the game significantly more than I had ten years ago. If you try playing the game with a standard 3-button controller, it'll be significantly more difficult to use the various web maneuvers available to Spider-Man and Venom which include dragging enemies towards you and swinging, so a six-buttoner is recommended. The control is quite responsive, so you shouldn't have any problems pulling off the standard double-tap running and jump attacks.

My opinion is that it's a solid enough beat-em-up, and worth picking up if it's available nearby and cheap. If only it was two-player..

Ouch. That *is* sad. But then again, I can get Shaq-Fu for $1, whereas I'd have to cough up $8 for Carnage. Considering both are crap, at least I could have the same amount of laughs for $7 less. =)

    "You can't polish a turd." :P

I'd go for MC, although I'd buy Shaq-Fu too, just to smash it against a brick wall and hear how it sounds.

I think I'd rather EAT Shaq-Fu than simply destroy it. That way, it would truly achieve the caliber of turd it could never accomplish on its own.

But bejeezus, Maximum Carnage isn't that bad.. it's not an agonizing game to play, unless you count the frequent cheap hits from boss fights with Doppleganger. How hard would it have been to work in a two-player mode? They already have two playable characters! Such a stupid oversight..

Isn't there a guy who's eaten bikes and computers?

I guess it isn't too outrageous.
