Default Review Master List: Master System / SG-1000 Games

This is a list of Master System releases, based off the Master List found at Guardiana. In this thread, all the review claims for Master System games (as well as SG-1000 games) will be listed. If you notice a game missing from that list, please reply so we can add it in.

Anyone who wishes to review a Master System/SG-1000 game can easily check here whether a game is still "free" or not. All claims will be filed in this thread.
If you're interested in writing a review, please announce it here or in the Upcoming Reviews & Features thread. Also, if it's your first time writing a review, have a look at our Review Manifest to give you a general idea of what to write about.

Since the PAL region saw the most releases for the platform (followed by Brazil), the list is structured as follows:

    - All European PAL releases (other regions and exclusive)
    - All the additional US-releases (exclusive and otherwise)
    - All the additional Brazil releases (exlusive and otherwise)
    - All Japanese (Mark III/Master System) exclusives
    - Japanese SG-1000 releases
    - other titles

For the time being this list does not include homebrew-releases of any kind. These may be included at a later date.

    Alright, let's begin

Awesome, Phantar! One thing I can see right away is that a pile of Korean games are missing. (No surprise I'd mention that, given my avatar.) SMSPower has a decent handle on those, but the Korean releases are still a real nightmare to track, let alone the legality of them. BTW the Australian release 4-Pak All Action is made up of retitled Korean games, e.g. Cave Dude = Toto World 3.

The Othello Multivision games are also absent, like Guzzler, Q*bert, Space Mountain, and James Bond 007. (The OMV is a SG-1000 clone.) The only other non-Korean SG-1000-compatible game I spotted missing was Challenge Derby.

I'm gonna look into the SouthKorean- and Megavision-related stuff, maybe I'll update the list accordingly tomorrow.

I've converted the simple list design into a table to make the Master list more readable. Took longer than I thought though. I'll eventually redesign the Game Gear Master List likeweise - but not today, it's getting late around here

/edit: Challenge Derby and Othello Multivision games added to the SG-1000 list.

Pretty bummed that some of my favorite games are already taken. I would like to claim at least two games for review: Choplifter for the Master System and Ys: The Vanished Omens.

I have a few questions about the guidelines for reviews: In the case of Choplifter, would I be able to also review the SG-1000 version for comparison's sake? And for Ys: The Vanished Omens, would I be able to review the game with the US Master System FM Sound Patch? Basically, all the patch does is add the FM Sound back in and change the names of the characters to follow original Ys canon.

    Reviews in the pipeline:
    Choplifter (Master System and SG-1000)
Ys: The Vanished Omens with FM Sound Patch!

I would say yes in both cases, provided you point out the fact and draw the according comparisons. For example in the case of Ys, you can point out that the original version had the FM sound that the US didn't, but that the sound can be patched in, and point out the specific improvements this brings.

Right, I understand. I was planning on highlighting the sound and music features of each version, since the music production for the Ys series is so beloved. I figure that it's important to showcase how simple the patch is and how the patch matches the Japanese version in spirit to present the game as it was originally intended. It would be worth pointing out how regrettable it was for SEGA to cost cut on the North American and European Master System to never include the FM Sound expansion, or even made it built in like the Japanese Master System.

I'd like to try my hand at some reviews. Maybe kick things off with Megumi Rescue.
Probably not many of us have the Paddle Controller, but Out Run should certainly be reviewed by someone who does, seeing as that is one of the earlier home console games with analog steering. Super Racing and Alex Kidd BMX are two others with analog steering.

One correction to your list Phantar - there is no such thing as an SG-3000. The first Sega generation included the SG-1000, SC-3000, and SG-1000 II. The next generation was the Mark III (with FM and keyboard add-ons, among others), and the Master System.

Has Wonderboy III for the SMS been claimed? If it isn't I'd like to do a review for it.

I haven't done a review here for a while, been busy with my own blog, but if Master System reviews are being added then I'll gladly join the fray. I'll be willing to take on both Master of Darkness & Montezuma's Revenge.

Thanks for pointing that out - somehow I've gotten the Mark III confused with the SC-3000. Rookie mistake, I know... I've fixed the post accordingly

    Claim for Megumi Rescue Filed.

You mean Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap? It's still available, I can mark it as claimed if you want.

So I said I would like Sonic the Hedgehog in the other thread. I'd also like Golden Axe Warrior if possible. Probably shouldn't ask for any more than that though I'm tempted to ask for Alex Kidd in Miracle World too.

If it's okay with you, let's stick with Sonic and Golden Axe Warrior for the time being. For one, vintagegamecrazy has already said that he's already got a couple of reviews ready to go, though he didn't specify which. Also, since the reviews for the 8bit games are freshly opened, I wouldn't want to reserve too many at once for a single person - others should have their shot as well. Should the game still be available once you've finished one of your first two claims, I'll happily put it aside for you. Hope that's alright?

/edit: VGC just sent me his list; Miracle World is not on it. you still wanna go for it, or would you rather wait a little?

Thanks very much for adding those Korean titles, Phantar. I think there are a few more to be added, e.g. Dr. HELLO, as given here:

    http://www.smspower.org/Tags/KoreanExclusive

They'll always be a moving target, I think, as Bock et al. keep turning up new and undumped games.

Yeah, scouring the Korean games market of the 1980s can be rather confusing (there was a Special on The History of South Korean Gaming over at Hardcoregaming 101 a while back, but even that is rather sketchy in parts; when it comes to whether a specific game was released for the MSK and/or the Master System, the article sometimes even manages to contradict itself).

Anyways, thanks for the link. I'll make sure to have a look at it. Though judging from the spotty info I can get, I'll only include a game in the list if I can also find a somewhat trustworthy, authentic picture of an actual cart and/or box - the existence of a ROM alone is not proof of an actual release. By that logic though, Dr. Hello should be included at any rate.

Some of the Korean ROMs are actually dual-boot -- that is, they'll run on either the MSX or Master System, believe it or not! Maybe that helps explain the lack of clarity.

No, no, no: it's Dr. HELLO. Or, arguably, Dr. HELLO. Glad we cleared that up.

(Jokes aside, Dr. HELLO did indeed get a cart release.)
