iPods can be reformatted and reinstalled by Apples Restore utility (which is now built into iTunes.)

Check your computers RAM, it sounds like a memory location isn't working, and whenever the computer hits it, it locks up because it's not expecting it to not work.

Also, check your powersupply, and reseat everything just for good measures..

Hold on, there's a utility out there (Pod Tools? I think...) that allows you to recover music off an iPod. Not sure if it works with a broken disc, but you might try it.

Careful with these, some of them can ruin you iPod. If you know someone with a mac, see about Senuti, works like a charm.

@Evildragon: If It's a RAM problem, then why did it not boot up afterwards?

@Genesis Knight: I don't think that will work (I already tried iPod agent). To be more specific, the disk didn't spin up for a while. so I bonked it against my desk and it spun up again (lol). Only now the iPod only sees Pics, all my music and video is gone. Maybe there's something for iPods like that program that recovers pictures from corrupted memory cards?

RAM can corrupt things on the HD.. Also, RAM issues can be intermittent sometimes..

Just check the RAM and reseat things, you'd be surprised what can work.. Chances are though you WILL need to reinstall..

The iPod database is corrupt. Take the renamed files, and re-import them into iTunes...

For future reference:

Should Windows give you shit you can get a Linux OS "LiveCD" (the OS runs from the CD) that will "see" your files on your HD. You could probably make a backup of these files with the LiveCD if you have more than one CD/DVD drive.

If some are missing, they may be gone from the iPod.. search the iPod for all of the extensions (*.xxx where xxx is the extension to the video file), and see if it pops up.. if not, it's gone..

Are you referencing after XP CD corrupted my HD and before I reinstalled?

If So, then I tried that, I used both knoppix and Gparted and both said that my HD is corrupted and unreadable.

I'm no Windows hater, but I'm glad I made the switch from it.

But I can feel for your info loss. I had a HD die last year and I had some custom made CD covers I worked on for months get wiped off the face of the earth.

It can get rid of certain videos due to the corrupted database when you re-sycned.. It could have overwritten it..

FUCK!! I gotta reinstall AGAIN.

Stupid XP DIED AGAIN. I'm writing this ONCE AGAIN from my (very nice) Friend's house.

THIS TIME, XP Died and corrupted while installing basic apps (Norton, Netscape,etc.) as per my recovery effort from the first crash.

I'm guessing your right Evildragon, it is a RAM Failure. Of course, I did run Linux on this Laptop for a LONG time without a hitch...

Microsoft uses the RAM more than Linux, which is actually a bad thing.. You could have 4GB of RAM, and fill it up, as Windows doesn't know how to Page properly.

You should also try to install motherboard drivers when you first install too. That's one more thing you should try.

I always do that, I always check the dell site for upgrades so thats not the prob.

I just think its crap RAM. Gonna be a pain replacing it cuz its for a laptop.

Wait, if it's for a Dell laptop, what's the laptop? I might be able to sneak you a free stick.

The kind of stick I have access to free is 128MB PC100 modules, if it's an early laptop...
