Dell laptops generally run hot.. Mine runs quite hot, but never used a pad, or had problems that were heat related...

You could try and use a pad. Just remember though, the heat from a laptop can damage your sperm count. (not kidding either! the heat "cooks" them) so you might want to use a pad anyway, for good luck...

Judging by the speed of a G3, probably not much.

I'd suggest an Intel based Mac however, because the older PowerPC ones will not be supported for much longer.

Also, a G3 is painful to deal with.. I have a 433MHz overclocked G3 PowerMac with a Radeon 7000, and while the computer kicks ass for Quake III, for general stuff in OS X, it's VERY SLOW...

Atleast a G4 iBook (the last gen ones)... Those can technically play Doom III if you so must...

If your laptops Wifi connects to your network, just use the Wifi to connect to the older computers...

As long as the 486 has atleast 95, and the Pavilion has atleast 98, networking should be a breeze, if you have the drivers...

A wireless router will route the traffic.

As long as the wifi is connected by wire, or is a wireless router with ethernet jacks, they all communicate..

Look up the OSI networking model.. The only thing different between the computers is Layer 1, the physical layer.. Everything else is the same... The Wireless router (or access point) will do the layer 1 conversion for you..

Then just bring the computers to the wifi router, or use a long ethernet cable from router, and go to a switch where the computers are located..

I had to do cable runs in my attic, not easy, but had to be done.. (was done before wifi came out)

    Just some info:

The Intel chips in Macs run MUCH cooler than the PowerPC chips ever could. My Mac Pro (dual Intel Xeon) is silent. My old G4 (dual 1Ghz G4) had super loud fans that were designed to cool all of Arizona. You needed to wear hearing protection if you were within a mile of the computer.

Plus, if you get an Intel Mac, you can still run Windows, and as the world has said with their pocketbooks, Windows rocks hardcore and is the OS to have!!!!

yes, your original plan should work, as long as you set the IP's correctly.. no router=no DHCP server, and thus manual IP addressing..

if you need to, when you do this, i can make some Class B IP's for you (to not conflict with the Class C addresses you probably have on the laptops Wifi, to avoid conflict)

EVERY operating system with networking support allow manual IP's, just like they do for automatic IP's...

    It's a part of the TCP/IP stack...

well, i was right about the RAM, but that totally sucks..

but you cant blame Dell... you should blame the shitty lead-free solder most companies are using today.. (xbox 360 red ring of death anyone? iBook video problems)

Also, please confirm that the RAM you purchased is even compatible with the laptop.

Even though the laptop has the Dell brand on it, their motherboards are manufactured by Intel.

Don't worry, I've had much worse. (Had a customer that was an ungrateful little......em, you know.. Wanted me to pull a miracle out of my ass, make XP work on a Pentium 133MHz 64MB RAM.. And when I did hack it to run, she was unhappy with the fact her scanner no longer worked, which was an old hand scanner)

Well, that's usually the bare minimum. But, XP doesn't check the requirements it laid down on the box, if started by the CD. Thus, it actually will attempt to run on a 133MHz Pentium. And 64MB is the minimum, so it does work too.. XP is mainly 2000's kernel, which had no issue working on a 133MHz Pentium..

Just some of the things I've had to do.

Even more worse, is customers who actually find your home phone number!

What kind of moron wants XP on a 133?

They should have accepted that their PC sucked and lived with shitty ass Win95.

    I remember running Win95...on a 486/66 with 12 MB of RAM. Don't miss 95 or 98 at all.

I tried to talk her into upgrading, but she insisted her PC was "fast as lightning!" LOL

My boss gave me a dead stare, and he told me in the back, "Either this customer is on something, or she really thinks her computer is fast and modern!"

She also complained her burner would cause coasters everytime. I tried to explain that the CPU couldn't transfer the data fast enough to the burner, from the 2GB HD. She didn't want to believe it.

(oh, and she ran in 256 colors, 640x480).. This lady HAD to have been on crack...
