Wow this is becoming very impressive indeed. Would love to see it if you can make a simple room which can be walked about in.

    Hi Game Taff,

    It should be possible

The main problem that I have today, is the mesh loader.

I want to use a standard format (and open) but many of them use the XML synthax (Collada for example) and it's too big (memory usage, and loading speed) for a Sega Saturn.

Does anyone know an open binnary (or raw) format with quad compatibility (instead of triangle) ?

OBJ, for crying out loud. Unless you plan to include skinning (most Saturn games didn't!), that pretty much should cover what most games did on the system. Also Sega used DXF back in the day. Your best bet is probably to just make a converter for your own format instead, though (to avoid wasting time in parsing as well as the longer loading times inherent to text formats).

Random thought: will you support gouraud shading in paletted mode? This is not supposed to work in theory but it's documented, what it does is interpolate the indices like they were RGB colors. So if you focus on just using the B component, you can make gradients using 32 color palettes, which then allow you to do all sorts of weird stuff. (R and G are used to select which 32 color palette you'd use and would be the same for all vertices =P)

EDIT: btw if anybody wonders what cool effects you could do with that: besides the obvious chrome stuff everybody likes to talk about, you could make a ramp that results in cel shading, or you could make a gradient such that it looks like it has a Fresnel effect (something that wasn't common until much later, for the record).

I think you're right Sik, I'll add a converter on Jo Map Editor to export popular 3D format to my own format.

    Thx

For Gouraud Shading and other effect, I'll try to add everything possible

Yes it's cool 😃 In my side, I still working on the 3D mesh loader. It's very fun to make Sega Saturn 3D models using Maya or other next gen 3d editors 😃 it's like Back to the future 😁

Good luck with that! Especially if you want to add it for 8 or less bit textures.
