Default Continuing Old Threads, what is the problem?

I was perplexed why the Mitsubishi VCR thread got locked, it was an interesting thread.
The moderator BonusKun apparently locked the thread because it was old.
What is the purpose in that?
There is hardly anything worth talking about on this forum as it is, why decrease participation even more by locking threads and chasing away members?

He bumped an old thread to show us that a VCR was used in Joy.

Theres legit almost no discussion to be had about that.

OK, so it would be better for people to not post?
I spent more time in that thread after it was bumped than any other of the other barely active threads.

I doubt that bumping an old thread was specifically the issue here. If I had to guess why the thread was locked, It probably has something to do with the fact that Tasuke has made little contribution to this forum lately, outside of his posts to discuss his various collections. While I personally have nothing against the guy, this is perhaps not the best place to keep trying to discuss collections of items that are totally unrelated to Sega consoles. Especially when it has been made clear that he is already a member of forums that are dedicated entirely to the discussions of vintage electricals, dolls and model kits respectively.

Old threads are bumped around here all the time, so while I am only guessing at why the thread was locked, I think it may have been a good idea to lock it. Tasuke's old threads have been locked after a necrobump before, so this isn't new.

So in response to your question: Yes, if you make little contribution to the subjects the forum is meant for, and you bump an old thread to discuss something not relevant to the forum, its probably best not to post.

So expedite the death of the forum is what you're saying?

Or discuss things that actually have merit in discussion.

Nobody on any forum ever gives a shit about any of Tasuke's old obsolete electronics and anime dolls and I have no idea why he continues to post them here. Neo-Geo forums just straight up banned him to get rid of him.

I agree with everything OP has said, as I've had his mindset on this matter for some time too. If people want to chat, let them chat. Locking thread discourages chatting. Which is especially bad on more quiet forums because the side effect is even more decline in forum activity.

That and how many times I've wanted to add to topics that were already locked is crazy. So yes, OP. I feel and completely understand your pain. What's not interesting to one mod, could be very interesting to many others.

I don't understand forums that discourage bumping old threads. If that is how it should be, make the forum auto-archive old threads. Then that way, the threads are retained and it makes it impossible for people to reply to them.

Bumping old threads screws up the database on the back end of the forum, with the potential to crash.

never knew this, always just assumed it was etiquette - me, ive bumped old guides/etc on here just to say thanks, but i tend to only do so with something relevant to add, especially if its a game/etc with a new development. personally, ive never taken shit for doing so, so i assume this guy doing it as a vanity thing is the problem.

There are several issues here IMO:

    - Tasuke is the kind of weirdo that most of new breed of the Sega-16 community can't tolerate.
    - We NEVER had any tradition of telling people to not bump old threads. Also, it's stupid to create dozens of threads for the same subject. But other communities, like neo-geo.com see it differently, however, it was never our tradition to complain about necrobump. The same for nearly insane levels of derailment; it has always been a Sega-16 thing.
    - His post was on topic and not offensive at any rate. Why do you have to be so harsh towards him?
    - Why do we have an Off Topic session in the forum if we can't share some outlandish stuff (I'm not talking about porn, pedo or utter crap stuff)?

Sega-16 has become so feeble-minded recently that it's hard to find any kind of healthy, lighthearted discussion here lately.
It's bizarre, 'cause it looks like we managed to promote the worst of both worlds: ad nauseam political correctness and intolerance at the same time.

It's INSANE to me the amount of people that insulted really, really hard and to a personal level Tasuke for the sake of him being an otaku weirdo whose existence is unbearable for a dozen of really mediocre members.
All the "reasons" I've read so far to try to justify the coward level of backlash towards the guy seemed really hypocrite; to say the least.

IF we are to get rid of people who don't have the main theme of the site as the main interest of their lives and/or to trash people who don't positively contribute to the community; oh boy, we have lots of people to hunt down. And among them are several of the Tasuke's strongest haters.

The sterilization of the forum has being a trend for some years now and we can contemplate its amazing results. Most of the threads are either attwhores running yet another lame party about their super shallow and childish opinions; or just pure dog shit, brain-dead discussions about stuff like the Sonic's friends.

Yeah, let's keep the evacuation of the weirdos and bring more mediocre, feeble-minded people so we can all agree about everything all the time and be finally happy in our full-blown idiocracy.

Didn't once mention Tasuke's shitposting though.

He has zero merit in like any actual discussion, he just posts pictures of things and participates in absolutely no other discussion, why would we want that?

Also don't know about you, but no I don't particularly want to know about his fetish for young looking anime girls, life is creepy and weird enough as it is.

It's the same reason most forums have a reply limit on a single thread, it has to do with the back end database and how it's archived on the server.
