    Default Turrican

Accolade brought the Amiga run-'n-gun classic Turrican to the Genesis in 1991, sporting a great box cover by famed sci-fi and fantasy artist Boris Vallejo. Many Genesis gamers took the game at face value, unfamiliar with the decidedly different style of action game they were about to play. The result left a bad taste in the mouths of many, something that would remain until Factor 5's stellar Mega Turrican arrived a few years later. Sadly, Turrican itself would eventually disappear as a franchise (something we reported on a few years back) leaving a grand total of only two games on the Genesis. Well, three if you count the Universal Soldier based on its source material. We've a full review of the one that started it all, so grab a rifle and lock and load!

Turrican is one of the most popular computer-/videogames here in Germany.
However, most people prefer the series on the Amiga, with Ballistic´s Turrican-1-port for Mega Drive having an especially bad reputation. Ah well, it is a game also released for C64, so some bad aspects my be the result on the original hardware it was planned for.
However, I still wanna have it.

I remember hating it when it first came out, but that was because I was raised on balls-to-the-walls RnGs like Contra and even Midnight Resistance on Genesis. Going back and playing it now, it's not as bad as I thought it was, but it is decidedly different. There's a lot more focus on exploration than all-out action, and the game is still hard as hell.

Run 'n' guns aren't platformers. Action games are platformers though.

I hate Turrican in pretty much all of its forms except for Mega Turrican and, to a lesser extent, Super Turrican. Otherwise Turrican is just so Turricany.

I liked Turrican just because it was the closest I was going to get to a 16-bit Bionic Commando. Mega Turrican is a really good action game, but the arm grapple seems more like an afterthought in the level design.

Like Joe, the only Turrican I could bear was Mega Turrican. This was a quality review, though.

Thanks for the kind words, I wasn't expecting any praise. I have a long way to come before I can write anything as good as the other writers

You're being too humble. It's not like it's an arcane secret to write reviews - this one was just as good as anything else on the site.

Ah...but it is! Do you not know of the ancient, esoteric tome "The ten steps to writing good reviews"?...yeah I'm not a very confident guy, thanks for the encouragement though

Factor 5 recently announced that they are working on a next-gen Turrican title. It's about time, they've been in the vile grip of LucasArts for too long now.

Coincidentally, I just started this Mega Turrican remix:

Aside from a horde of Star Wars Rogue Squadron games, they recently made the critically shafted Lair for PS3.

Which, BTW, I had fun with. But that's off topic.

As is the fact that your Turrican remix is good stuff, Gecko. I didn't expect much since I hardly remembered a single tune from the game, but that one was suitably melodic.
