    Black Hole Assault

After Capcom's Street Fighter II exploded onto the scene, dozens of copycats popped up on consoles everywhere. Among them was Black Hole Assault, an early Sega CD brawler that was only slightly less yawn-inducing than most of the other imitations out there. Even the cool cut scenes and CD soundtrack couldn't save this one from obscurity. Read our full review, and remember that we play bad games so you don't have to!

This and Jaguar XJ220 had me quickly regretting my purchase of the Sega CD. I was thankfully somewhat fortunate to have a local game rental store offer Sega CD titles, so all I lost was the $3 or so I paid to Performance Hobby to rent this garbage over a few days. Games such as Black Hole Assault really drove home that all the Sega CD did was add CD-audio to Genesis games at a bargain price of $300. In hindsight I don't mind so much, as titles such as Sol-Feace really are blessed with great CD soundtracks which will live on regardless of how mediocre the games were and will remain.

Hey now, gamers were clamoring for the Sega CD and games like "Black Hole Assault" all throughout 1992 that they scarfed up whatever piece of silicon that was somehow tied to the Mega CD, like BHA's prequel "Heavy Nova" which apparently sold out of it's first shipment upon release a half-year or so before the SCD was released:

"Don't worry though, we've got more copies of our crap in a cartridge coming your way. Just WAIT and see what we'll be coming out with on the exciting, new state-of-the-art Sega CD system!!! "

Micronet makes me sad and lonely; I'm not kidding.

I was so impressed with the presentation of this game. The cut scenes are so good and the voices and music are great. I just can't believe how lacking the animation of the robots was! IMO, Heavy Nova had more animation than this game! Like Heavy Nova, doing the moves in this game requires being at a certain distance from your enemy in order for something to work and some patience, otherwise you're left with just punch, kick and jump moves. This is what makes the game so frustrating to many players. Thankfully, I was able to figure it out and beat the game. I will give this game a few more spins. I just got it in the mail last Friday. I would give this game a solid 5.

I've just tried this game again last Friday and I want to lower my previous score from a 5 to a 3. I can't believe I just beat the game so easily with crouching punches, crouching kicks, jump kicks and rockets/laser shots. Wow I just don't know what to say. Micronet seriously downgraded. Heavy Nova is actually way better than this! They spent so much time with the cinemas, but forgot on the actual animation of the robots and moves.
