Default Zero Wing - Broken Score Fix - Help

So, I'm part of a group which votes weekly for a shmup to be played by the members and many times a game cannot be played because it has what we call "broken score". This means that there is some kind of quirk in the game which allows a player to keep scoring indefinitely and score an unreal amount of points with no end in sight.

As it turns out, Zero Wing has a situation described here in detail: [On the first loop] "Die in the last boss before the final pod leaves the screen and play the last checkpoint again. Each time this is done you get approximately 200.000 points, which also means 2 additional lives (first extend with 70.000, then one for each 100.000 points)"

So, does anyone know a way to fix this?

    Interesting but ye, annoying.

Interesting cuz with some friends we recently talked about this topic and we thought that it would be interesting to establish two lists: games with and without broken scoring. On Mega Drive but other platforms too.

Sorry for that. I tried renaming it so that it is clearer, but it doesn't show in the main board. Maybe a mod could help here

That's an interesting idea. There is not much around regarding this.

Might as well keep the thread as it is. A skilled hacker will probably have a fix for this posted here eventually I imagine.

Just trying to get deeper into the subject, but without being technical. What would you do to fix this specific case? Change the scoring system? Change extend lives value?

I guess those would be the most simple answers.
Is it even possible to do that?

I can change the score needed for extra lives, but it would apply to the entire game, not just the last boss. Would that be good enough?

EDIT: Let me clarify. I haven't checked the game, so I'm guessing it would apply to the whole game.

Yes, that will definitely work. It would make the game harder, but it would fix the broken score. If you could do that, it would be really great.

Ok, looked at the game and I'm pretty sure I can fix the scoring problem. The only question is, what specifically do you want changed? Here's some of the options that might work...

The first extra life score bonus eliminated. (the 70,000 point bonus)
The second extra life score bonus eliminated. (the 100,000 point bonus)
Both of the extra life score bonuses eliminated.
Raise the points needed for one or both of the extra life score bonuses. (If so, what points do you want for the extra life bonuses?)
Or a combination of any of the above.

Let me know if any of those sound good, or any ideas you have. Should be able to do them with one to three Game Genie codes.

What about reducing the point count of the enemies that populate the final checkpoint?
Then you obviously wouldn't need to change the nature of the extend routine.

I'm not familiar with the game, so are those enemies used anywhere else in the game?

EDIT: If not, then your idea might be a good solution.

Makes sense. Wouldn't change the whole game.

Zero Wing is a great game, and one of the reasons for this is that every stage has a specific set of enemies.
So the answer to your question is NO.

Need a little help finding the area that you guys are talking about. I'm using the built-in level select cheat to skip ahead. If I set the "Screen" to F, and the "Stage" to 8, am I in the correct area? Both of those are the highest values that you can select.

    Here's a screen shot...
