    Megadrive Plutiedev site is up!

    Just opened the Plutiedev site!
    https://www.plutiedev.com/

Going to be uploading stuff about Mega Drive development (as I feel like it), so I thought it may be relevant. Not much for now but there's a couple of effects described there. I may start writing about more mundane stuff at first however.

Home page is a placeholder until I can come up with a decent layout for it :P

I totally didn't crosspost it from Spritesmind.

Seems like this would be a good match for GitHub.

Interesting site and one thing that called my attention was the Smother Rotation, it seems a strange approach because in this case you need to take care of 8 individual "objects", changing positions and frames according to the position of each one.

Could someone point out if in this case a rotation on one image of 32x32 (1024 pixels) for example wouldn't be faster? Maybe with some LUT's.

If I had a dollar for every time somebody told me to just use GitHub...

Sprites are not objects (the former is what the VDP deals with, the latter is what your game logic deals with). Keeping them separate is the key to being able to handle large sprites easily and also the key to doing this kind of trickery without much trouble. One object could output many sprites at once.

The smaller, the faster, but this technique is still probably faster :P (the 68000 is slow at moving lots of data around)

Hey, let's move all of Sega-16 to GitHub.

Anyway, just changed the configuration to ensure any attempt to access the site as plain http will redirect to https. Let me know if anybody has problems but a quick test seems to show it works fine.

EDIT: added a list of all VDP registers (sans undocumented stuff, I'll leave that for a separate page to avoid clutter). Really pretty much what's on the official documentation (aside from mentioning the "invalid" hscroll mode since it's useful), the idea is to eventually have a single place to reference things quickly in the middle of a conversation instead of having to scourge everywhere for the information we want.

    Cool site.

Just curious, how did you set it up? You had to buy the website's address, right? Was it cheap or expensive?

Do you run it off your own server?

    Got it from Kualo:
    https://www.kualo.co.uk/webhosting

Bought the domain and host (which includes both site and e-mail hosting, as well as free https). There are UK and US servers though both cost the same (so pick whichever you want, I went with the UK one). If you get hosting though make sure to order at least a year (this goes for any provider, mind you). They also have a site builder but I can't comment since I don't use it (I make my site on my computer then upload all the files over FTP).

On the topic of free https:

At least I can continue berating everybody else for not using https without being a hypocrite :v (though I had to explicitly enable Let's Encrypt from the control panel, this may not be obvious at first) I even forced the site to redirect http to https (see snippet below on how to do that with .htaccess).

    Code:
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
    RewriteRule (.*) https://%{SERVER_NAME}/$1 [R=301,L]

Very useful site. I really like the way you have explained and demonstrated the techniques. It is beautifully done.

Trying to explain how to use the mapper to get more than 4MB:
    https://www.plutiedev.com/beyond-4mb

Not sure if explanation is clear enough (at least to people who have a basic idea of how the console works), may need to rewrite it later. Also the main reason to explain this now is that we were messing with the Sonic & Knuckles lock-on mapper earlier (which is a variant on the usual one) and I want to have all that stuff properly documented. Will be later working on the hardware reference for the two mappers.
