Well in an hypothetical scenario where I'm asked to choose the features I would like to see included/not included, here are my choices:

HIGH PRIORITY (and achievable in my opinion):

    1. Under no circumstances can Sega use the 3 button controllers. They must have learned from Sony's mistake if they were planning to. It may be more "classic" and look more Batman-y but it was not only inferior to the 6 buttons controller in terms of design and durability but would also severely limit gameplay in some games (I don't see them release a classic without Comix Zone for example, which is better with 6 buttons). Including just a single controller is fine assuming the price is right.

Sega could easily get Hyperkin to manufacture the GN6 controller with Sega branding. If you've tried it you know it is IDENTICAL to the original. In fact, I've replaced the innards of one of these with an original North American controller. And they do make a USB version already, however some sort of an "Home" button will need to be added I guess.

    m07016_01.jpg

    2. HDMI only. To remove association with past products composite shouldn't be an option. Also, Naturally 4:3 or 16:9 options are a must by now.

    3. Good sound is vital since it will be the difference between this and the available alternatives. As far as I know there is no new 3rd party device or official collection which does this right. I won't buy it if the sound is bad period. As someone already said they should let you choose between the original YM2612 and the 3438 "sounds" and I agree. This was partially done before with the PSG sound in Streets Of Rage for the 3DS but I can't testify to the audio quality.

    4. Some unreleased content can be a big selling point. Nintendo did this with Starfox 2 but I think Sega could do better giving their relatively large support to the homebrew community. How awesome would a brand new official Mega Drive game be? At the very least some games that were region exclusive like Monster World IV or Alien Soldier. The reason I put it in the HIGH PRIORITY list is simply because of how easy in would be for them to add such a thing, given the fact they can't make money of these games in any other way (naturally, only their own IPs). Low cost to gain ratio. Heck, there are some 100% complete ROMS that are already leaked.

    5. NO Game Gear, Master System or "bonus" flash games. Can't stress this enough. Don't be AtGames, this isn't a car DVD player.

    LOW PRIORITY:

    6. No cart slot. For three reasons:
    • People still remember AtGames's horrible consoles, and the cart slot won't help them forget.
    • The Mega Drive Mini should be... Mini, and a cartridge slot will surely ruin the aesthetics.
    • Most importantly, for the sake of completeness it should be considered a novelty Plug and Play solution in the same way Nintendo's minis are, and not a device you tinker with for best results. This is what hacking is for (and it would be smart of them to make it easily hackable).

    7. An headphone jack, maybe even on the controller.

    8. An option to switch regions could be cool for some games, such as Contra: Hard Corps, Castlevania and SOR.

    9. Scanned manuals might be an unrealistic expectation but it will add a lot to the experience. In general, any extra effort to justify a purchase will be appreciated, anything between simple text description of the games to photos and maybe even videos of the production, concept art and interviews with developers etc... I know it's also unrealistic but those are the things that make all the difference. It is highly likely there will be a lot of free storage left even in memory chip just like it did in Nintendo' minis, no reason not to fill it.

    10. Multiple versions (Jap, Eur and NA) will surely help push customers to buy, Nintendo did this with the SNES Mini.

    11. An attractive yet clean menu that should exhibit more effort than the Sony one, but be more mature than Nintendo's.

    12. No online features and expand-ability. Again, this should be an All In One device. customers shouldn't feel compelled to buy the latest games pack or sign up to see high scores etc. Some people like it (including myself), but not the target audience.

    13. Zoom and overlay options, toggle-able scanline filter, and in a perfect fantasy world (fantasy... zone?) maybe even an Anti-Dithering shader. Couldn't care less about a Composite CRT filter.

where does this antidi-thering filter/shader come from? What is the recommended way to play dithered games on Fusion/etc? I'm not satisfied at all with Fusion's own Composite mode (ALT+8)

Even though AtGames is out, i still have incredibly low expectations for this thing. It's gotta sound better than the Xbox One / PS4 Classics collection (which still at best sounds like a VA7 model 1, and very often worse), or else there's no way I buy it. I couldn't care less if they choose to emulate a 2612 or a 3438, so long as they choose to emulate it well. And don't skip out on emulating the VDP well, either. It's gotta have emulation at least as good as that of the Nintendo minis for me to really consider it. And that should be true of the hardcore enthusiast community because lots of us are either playing on the best open-source emulators available or real hardware. Both of which sound great and look correct.

But the hardcore enthusiasts will never touch anything that isn't the original console anyway… this is more for the masses who just care that the games play well.

Well then they should have just let AtGames make it.

Came here to read any updates from other eagle eyed MDmini enthusiasts and I am pleasantly surprised to see AtGames have indeed removed any SEGA flashback consoles from their site.

Lets now all prey together that M2 is in charge of all emulation and AtGames are not making the plastic for this mini

Are you sure you didn't just get a bad unit? The reason I'm saying it is because I've replaced all parts of the original controller with a GN6 and they are 100% interchangeable.

The only difference may be the fact that it takes a while to "break a new controller in". Some controllers can feel stiff when they are new.

Yeah, the GN6 is pretty darn good, but as strider1911 said, a little stiff at first.

I think Sega will ask Retro-bit to make the controllers. The fact that their licensed controllers, expected in November, are yet nowhere to be found, is significant to me.

It's not that difficult to make a great Mini console: perfect emulator, nice menu, good games selection and easy to hack, nice case (no cartridge) and controllers (6 button, please, although if they want to include 2 extra 3 button controllers for full nostalgia, I'm ok with that), and it will just sell like crazy.

What Sony did is only good for Sega to be warned about what not to do.

Man... I know Sega ditched At Games (thank God)... but this all just sounds like wishful thinking. My expectations for this thing are incredibly low. There is no way most of what you said here is going to happen IMO. The quality will be slightly better than the At Games garbage, but I'm picturing something along the lines of the Playstation Classic rather than the NES and SNES Classics. Complete with 3 button controllers, poor sound, extremely limited display options etc. I think the only place where it may shine will be in the games department. Simply because the Sega Collections released over the years have had plenty of great games. But I'm not holding my breath for this thing...

If M2 is handling the emulation (a big if, but really, who else would it be?), then there is reason to think that this will be done well. They have shown a serious commitment to quality for their Sega 3D Classics releases (probably way beyond what anybody was expecting). And there's also their Sega Ages 2500 releases on the PS2, which are flat out awesome and full of features and extra content.

Sega has a long history of outsourcing ports of old games to M2, so I think we can have at least a tiny bit of hope that the same will happen with the Mini.

I think it has to have perfect sound and not mess with the rest of the emulation that even most FPAG systems get right (graphics and speed). I don't know why people are so hellbent on it having HDMI output, it shouldn't need it. I bet the joysticks will be wireless, because why wouldn't they? And they must use the 6-button controller, but IMO only TecToy would have the nerve to put out a product using the obsolete 3-button controller. I also think that even crappy AtGames had savestates and filters in their last clone, why can't Sega also have it?

pack-in wireless controllers make no sense when you are aiming at people willing to recall memories back when they were young.

As for 3 button controllers I'm less sure but just because IIRC 6 button was the default pad soon enough in the system's life, though I guess this varies a lot from region to region. So it would make sense to just clone the classic launch time bat-pad 3B just because it looks way edgier but mostly because it was the most widespread, which is ultimately what they will aim at.
