    Master System Golden Axe Warrior

Sega gave Master System owners a Zelda-style game set in the Golden Axe universe, and though it's far from original, it's a an excellent homage to Nintendo's 8-bit classic. A large world, good story, and lots of secrets make this often overlooked title one worthy of addition to any Master System library. Read our full review for more details.

I was so glad when it came out, as it was one more great adventurey game before SMS software finally trailed off for good.

I played this game through and finished it a few years ago. I almost wrote a review then for it but never got around to it. I agree with the score, it's a really well done game but it didn't feel original enough to completely immerse me all the way. I wish Sega woulda made this game their own instead of plagiarizing The Legend Of Zelda so badly.

    I feel the same.

Now I've always found it grossly demeriting when people refer to any game similar in genre to Zelda as a 'Zelda-clone.'

There are just so many labels that describe games as platformers, beat-em-ups, shoot-em-ups, run-and-gun, role-playing, puzzles, etc. etc.
So how about a game that is action-adventure? F#ck no! Let's call it: 'Zelda-clone.'

... in the case for Golden Axe Warrior however, this is a 'Zelda-clone.' If not the best one ever made.

Golden Axe Warrior to its core is an unassuming repackaging of Zelda on the Master System. That said it's an otherwise good game - but it begs the question of why nothing new was attempted considering it was developed five years after its influence; some may relish this as a re-imagining of sorts, others may find it less than inspiring.

Neutopia, particularly Neutopia II, is the game Golden Axe Warrior should have aspired to be more like. Even so, Govellius is the action-adventure game here to own.

I usually tell people that Golden Axe Warrior is The Sprite from Dragon Warrior Plays Zelda.
