Default When playing Genesis games through the 32x, which console is running the game?

Does the 32x take on some of the duty, or does it act as a pass through device and run Genesis games exclusively from the genesis hardware? Like if I use the 32x to play Genesis games, will it take some of the strain off of the Genesis components like the 68000 and z80 by using its own hardware? The only thing that I know of that the 32x does when playing Genesis games is using itís own video encoder.

The 32X is just a pass-through when running genesis games, and doesn't lend any processing power at all.

As you mentioned, it does output nicer composite video than most Genesis models, since the 32X has it's own RGB encoder. The s-video out of the 32x is also really nice, if you mod it. This is probably the only advantage to playing Genesis games with a 32x attached.
    Modded consoles:
Master System (v7040) with s-video & direct AV out
Model 1 with 10mhz overclock & halt switches
    Model 1 with 10mhz 68010
    Model 2 VA2.3 with unfiltered Mega Amp, & s-video
    Model 3 VA1 with compatibility fixes & s-video
    32X with s-video

Awesome thanks for the response. This includes sound too? All sound produced is coming from the Genesis with all 32x games?

Yes, all sound just comes from the Genesis sound chips when playing regular Genesis games. I have heard that the 32x can actually add small amounts of background noise in to the Genesis's audio when the 32x is attached, but I haven't tested this myself, and can't confirm or deny.

The 32X has 2 PWM sound channels, if I remember right. These two sound samples mix with the genesis audio through pins on the cartridge port made for this purpose. A few games make good use of these channels. Afterburner uses them for the guitar instrument in the background music, and other games use them for drum and voice samples.
