    Sonic DJ Boy

Like beat-'em-ups? Beaten every Streets of Rage more times than you can count? If you're wondering which brawler to turn to next, there's always Kaneko's DJ Boy. It may not be high on the list of games that come to mind, but it's... out there. Keep your expectations low and you just might be surprised. Read our full review for all the roller skating, hamburger-eating details!

Awful gameplay, although with colorful and weird (in a good way) graphics.
    Not worth my time.

DJ Boy. What a great game.

My brother owned the arcade original when it was still a hot property, so of course I yearned to "bring the arcade experience home" by snapping up the Genesis version. We got yoinked with the Genesis version though, because those bastards removed the story elements and changed the fart attack to a pie toss attack, among other rips, compared to the more elegant Japanese Megadrive release. But hey, you can't have everything. DJ Boy still skates proud and kicks the poop right out of everybody who challenges him: mischievous kids, midgets, robotic clowns, big mamas, chippendales dancers, palette swapped versions of himself, big mama ninjas, and so on so forth.

Bottom line? It beats the Megadrive version of Double Dragon II, and that should be enough for anyone.

No combos, no special attacks...nope, you're armed with only the ability to kick and punch forward and backwards.
Protip: If you push both attack buttons at the same time, DJ Boy performs his crouching punch with both hands!

The cute kitty icon is for an extra life, something vital for beating DJ Boy.
That kitty's about the only eye catching thing in this game.
Don't forget the fact that when you jumpkick the cats that are floating from balloons, they drop a burger! Good, old, considerate, reliable floating helium cats. Gotta love 'em!

I liked the dynamite-tossing girl in the trolley from the first level
In the original arcade version of the game, she doesn't simply run off after flinging dynamite all over the place. Rather, she sticks around to get the crap beaten out of her.

she really should have been used more.
    She's heard that jive before.

I knew Cobb was going to say something. But you forgot to mention that it's not a hardhat!

Yes it is. He's not a DJ. He's a construction worker. He is in charge of drywall. I'd rather do that than be a lazy good-for-nothing DJ.

Worst part of it is, he really isn't a DJ. "DJ Boy" is an abbreviation of his name, Donald J. Boy. His name wasn't Donald in the arcade version, and yet he still wasn't a DJ, he was just a snazzy dancer. There never was a DJ... ever. It was just a cool name.

Oh crap, I think I just made things worse.

Any game that includes a "fart attack" can't be all bad.

Kaneko wanted to be further down with American Hip-Hop, which probably explains the random "D.J" in the title yo!

That aside, don't have much to say about the game. I used to view the box art with strong contempt as a kid whenever I saw this lone copy of "D.J Boy" at a long-gone local store back in the '90's, sort of mocking it with my eyes, seeing as it'd probably was never sold and sat in that corner forever. That was just my elitism over obscure third-party (publishers/developers) Genesis games with shoddy packaging however...back then.
