Default XB360. . .will read everything BUT games

    got a used 360 recently for $250
It's the premium version with the 20GB HDD and HDMI.

Took it home and found that it won't play any games.
There's no error message at all (and no red rings at all).
The loader just always asks me if I want to open the tray again.

I want to know if the problem is the drive or the laser.

Maybe someone flashed the drive in order to read illegally pirated games and tried to sign onto Xbox Live and got shut down. Just a guess.

The seal is still intact, so I don't imagine any wrong doing.

Call customer service, or check on microsoft's site first incase they have a fix for it.

This happened to my 2nd Xbox 360 - just said 'open tray' when u put a game in - or sometimes 'play dvd' where it would promptly ask you to put the disc into an xbox 360 console! Unfortunately it means the console is knackered so I'm afraid u r gonna have to get another one.

I'm -gasp!- agreeing with Joe here; buying a pre-owned 360 is a bad idea. You don't know what the crumbum who owned it before you did to it.

That said, if it's still under warranty you might be able to get the customer service bods to take a look at it. If not, you're probably out of luck. Sell it on to a blind kid as a CD player or something.

Where did you buy it from? a highstreet shop? ebay? I'd try and get my money back if I were you.
