that modern electronic devices don't seem like they're your property. Instead, they feel like you paid a shitload of money for a loaner. I think of how little I'm allowed to do, like on a computer, with my OWN DAMN PROPERTY. I mean I bought my computer and I have to deal with all of Vista's bullshit because microsoft makes me. granted, in theory I could do whatever I wanted, but it simply isn't really worth it.

The iPod, and most apple products are most guilty of this. Take for instance the first iPods battery. It couldn't be replaced, but was a throw away. They wouldn't replace it. Yet you paid for it, it was yours and they were telling you "ha ha, who cares what you want, we got your money fuck you!" and the way I constantly have to use POS apple programs with apple stuff because they make me. For some reason, because of all this dependence on other companies to keep my electronics working, I never feel like I own what I forked out, on some occasions over two grand for. AND THAT PISSES ME OFF! This is why I will never pay for "apple tv" or anything that keeps all my stuff beholden to an evil corporation like apple.

This is why I don't use Apple stuff, or buy MS operating systems.

I hear ya on that Vista, what a dog. I only use it because I need it for school, I'd go back to XP if I could.

I agree that iPods are crippled pieces of junk. Thankfully there is software out there that can bypass iTunes... I think. I hate the fact that it MUST sync whenever connected. I'd rather it work like a flash drive... I drag and drop the shit I want on it where I want it, no sorting by artist or groups unless I say so! The DRM is really bad if you buy crap from the Apple online store.

Sound quality of iPods suck ass as well. I plugged real headphones into mine and it was really lacking. I gave my iPod away. It didn't cut the muster.

Oh there are always ways to get around restrictions like that. There's a DRM software that you can use your music and movies on any computer. Companies are always trying to curb our enjoyment of the gadgets we spend so much money on. Hell I'm still trying to figure out how to burn PS1 and PS2 games on my Mac properly so that I can play them on my PS2. I hate you Sony!

I've gotten by lately using a CD player, a Genesis, a VCR, and a DVD player. I don't need the latest technology to define myself.

Psh. I've got a speaker rack five feet high in my old hippy van - all I do is drive around town and blast Motown hits and the Jet Set Radio soundtrack out the back windows.

You own the disc the software comes on, not the software itself; all this Vista 'bullshit' does is make sure your copy of Windows is legal and legitimate. I'm with you on the iTunes+iPod lockdown situation, though. I'm surprised no-one's seriously complained that they can't use their music on alternative players.

I really don't get all the hate on iPods. Okay, the battery wears out. So does every other battery on earth. The first iPod batteries couldn't be replaced I guess but who cares now its been fixed for a couple generations. iPods and their batteries wear out and get old just like everything else does when they get heavy use/you don't take care of them. The audio quality also might not be tops but I'm not an audiophile so I don't care and if I were, I'd would just pack a SCPH-1001 PS1 wherever I went. Totally outrageous but if I'm expecting extremely great sounding stuff out of an iPod then its really not.

I just can't relate, maybe its because my iPod is everything I thought it would be plus some, but then again it doesn't seem like I was expecting half as much as a lot of others

iPods don't even sounds as good as other MP3 players on the market. Every one of my portable MiniDisc players trounces the sound quality of an iPod. See a pattern?

Also, can users themselves change the iPod battery with a new one that they buy at a store, or do they have to send it to Apple? iPhones and those super-slim Macbook Air all have to go back to Apple.

It's not the ipod itself; it's a popular player for a reason, after all. My issue is with the fact you have to use the APPLE ipod to play the music you bought from the APPLE store encoded using APPLE encryption and transfer it using APPLE software. It's intensely hypocritical of a company and fanbase that whoops and hollers and points every time something with a Windows logo even hints at using DRM.

yeah, there is, I had to get it for my sister because she spilled a drink on her laptop and had to get a new one and all of her music was on her ipod and iTunes would've deleted it all. I'll never get an iPod, if I get an MP3 player, I'll just get one of the super cheap flash drive kind because they don't restrict you in any way shape or form. Right now I'm looking into a PSP but I'll have to mod the firmware to play emulators and do everything else I want to do. 99% of the restrictions comes from copyright related stuff, but whatever, I don't need grandpa Apple telling me what I can do with my music files, f that.
