    Default NHL '94

Hockey season is right around the corner, and sports fans know that this was one area in which the Genesis was truly untouchable. For all you fans of the ice out there, we have a review of NHL '94. Read it. Enjoy it. Just try not paint your chest afterward....please.

I personally like the earlier editions where you could fight. But this is still a solid release. You can still scate up hard and check the !@#$ out of someone.

The lack of fighting was rather surprising. More organ tunes, though.

This was the first hockey game I ever played on the Sega Genesis.

This game is pretty good, but after a while I found a trick that would pretty much guarantee you a goal. Take the puck handler (an especially fast one like Fedorov works great) into the goal line corner, then cut straight across to the other side, and shoot the puck as you're passing around the goalie. The poor saps just can't seem to handle the angle. I think the defense probably should have been more aggressive to recognize that they need to knock the puck handler on his bum and nip that cheap crap in the bud. After a while, I just started pulling my goalie at the start of the game and never putting him back in. Sadly, I could still win short games by about 40+ goals.

I concur! Some of the violence in the early games was amazing. I think it was either NHL Hockey or NHLPA Hockey where the players didn't take kindly to you hitting them after the whistle. It's the only 16-bit hockey game where I can remember that happening; every other edition just let you smack the guys around NFL Blitz style without penalty or retaliation.
