    Default Socket

Success breeds imitation, they say. Sonic The Hedgehog undoubtedly inspired many a mascot to lace up his boots and dash to the right. Among the pack was Vic Tokai's Socket, which manages to do everything needed to ooze mediocrity. It's not a bad game on its own, but it's entirely too derivative to stand out from the competition. Our full review is entirely original though, so there's always that!

This game is pretty good with some really nice music (though the tracks are a bit too short). Horrible, horrible sound effects, though. I also noticed that it drops frames now and again as you run around. I guess this doesn't use Blast Processing™.

I can't stand the noise it makes when you get low on energy. I liked this game, though.

I disagree with the review on many parts (damn, I should have filed in my review faster)...

This is one really great game, great gameplay, great music, great graphics, sound effects that can get REALLY annoying, what more could you want ?

Learning about framerates is like when you learn that you have been mispronouncing a word your entire life. You start noticing such little things that ruin everything you used to know in life.
It's annoying to notice and in the end, you'd rather have not found out in the first place.

I am actually surprised that a lower tiered prodcution company such as Vic Tokai would come up with a Sonic rip off. I figured they eventually went the way of Renovation and others.

Actually they haven't really. They're now a major provider of broadband internet and cell phone service in Japan. They haven't made any video games since the late 90s.

I remember the print ad for this game, featuring the title character w/many after images behind him, trying to portray him as super-fast liek SoniX. I also remember him having a resemblance to "Plucky Duck" of "Tiny Toon Adventures" fame. I briefly played the ROM years ago, it was meh-tastic.

Not that this game is total crap, but I'm surprised at the number of people who are defending it. How could anyone think the music in this game is good?

Because it is, at least 3 or 4 of the tunes are REALLY good with extremely well-constructed and catchy melodies. It's main failing point is that each track is too short and therefore loops too quickly.

Pretty Good Platformer w/ Nice Controls and Graphics, Pales in comparison to the Sonic Games on the Genesis though.

This game had absolutely no challenge until the final level, and that "challenge" only came through the slipshod way Socket moves through half-pipes.
