I think the third stage really introduce the 3D graphics for Silpheed... The first and second stage wasn't too impressing with 3D, but the third stage was awsome; I was wondering during those early 90s if the Sega CD was doing the actual 3D graphics in fact for a long time I thought it did.

You can tell that both the pre-recorded CD music and the Genesis music were comming directly from the CD because in option mode, the load time for Silpheed to play Genesis music is really slow. That may have something to do with it sounding as scratchy as it did.

I never knew what happened to them......perhaps someone got lucky or there's one less Genesis & Sega CD 2 in the world... I eventually threw away my CIB copy of "Silpheed" too, not having a SCD to play it with.

Yep, "Silpheed" defined the SCD for me. Pity I never got to play "Sonic CD" back then, when I cared. When I finally did play it in '03, I was quite disappointed at the jumbled level design.
I kept my SCD stored away in a basement with some of the CD still in tact. I did sell my 3DO for Playstation 1, which I latter regreted. The CD lazer stopped working for a while and I stopped playing the Sega CD for a long time until I finally spotted a Sega CD at a flea market around 2000ish. A few years latter that lazer disc readed broke so I found another one and it worked. So today I currently have 3 Sega CD units with two of them not work due to the little lazer CD reader not working. I actually open two of the units up and swapped the CD readers and manage to get one working at one time so I now know that the Sega CD is only as good as long as the CD reader works.

I liked Silpheed, as evidenced by the review I submitted over a year ago, though out of all my reviews I would like to say that I'd actually increase Vay to an 8 now instead of the 7 I gave it originally. It's aged well when I took the time to play it again (I was probably spoiled by the Sega CD Lunars when I got around to playing it), and the plot twists, particularly with the loss of a certain party member that left me stunned when it happened, were well executed.

Another funny coincidence was how I sold my 3DO back in the day to get a PS1 as well, and ironically, I regretted that too. Luckily, I bought another one around the same time I started splurging on Sega CD and 32X games, and I have 40 3DO games sitting in my library that brought my childhood back to me. I even bought an Atari Jaguar in 2007 as well, as i was determined to build up my retro collection a bit with the Sega CD/32X, 3DO, and Jaguar. As citied on a recent post, I've been building up my Sega Saturn collection as well (over 50 games in that one already).

And yes, I'm one of those guys who either spends his money on video games or anime for the most part.

    Man, I need a life!

I could never get into this one. I preferred Sol-Feace.

You and me both, I don't get the game, it's slow tedious to play with and bad weapon system and it's ugly to look at.

I like how the actual levels are also your enemy in this one, and that last boss was pretty intimidating. But underneath the FMV effects there's a pretty generic and simple game with a poor weapons system and repeating bosses.

Has anyone had issues with Silpheed freezing? I just picked up a copy at a local game shop. The disc had a couple of scratches that look like they could cause problems, but the shop has a return policy, so I thought I would give it a shot. The game played fine until I continued on the third level. The level started to load, but then just froze. I'm thinking this was probably caused by the scratched disc, unless this is a common issue.

Does your copy have scratches? It sounds like this game is really finicky when it comes to scratches.

It happened to me too last time I played it. No scratches.

My Sega CD doesn't even recognize the CD in the drive. It only happens to this and Sonic CD out of over 50 games.

I had this for DOS.. wasn't anywhere near as good. I do remember my retail Silpheed discs had a trojan on them though!
