    Default Chiki Chiki Boys

Chiki Chiki Boys is a great little game that plays a lot like Wonder Boy in Monster Land. Reprogrammed by Sega due to Capcom's licensing issues with Nintendo, this colorful and engaging arcade port is a solid adventure that more people need to try out. It flew under the radar of a lot of people, and needs to be played! Read our full review for more information.

The last Sega-reprogrammed port of a Capcom CPS1 title for the Genesis. The last-ever one was "Final Fight CD" for the Sega CD in 1993, which was right before Capcom began their ill-fated effort at developing for the Genesis themselves.

I miss this game! I want to "re-buy" it again someday! It's Wonderboy, but more arcade action oriented with cutesy catchy music.

Just beat this one on Hard and got the best ending. It's a nifty game and comfortably makes 8/10, but it could've been 10/10 if it weren't for a few problems.

The biggest one is the same thing that mars so many other platformers: cheap shots from respawning enemies. Respawning enemies tend to be a drag to begin with, but when an enemy's still offscreen, or invisible behind a cloud that covers the edge of the screen (which is arguably worse), it shouldn't be able to hit the protagonist. This isn't much of an issue on Normal, but on Hard when you've got much less margin for error, it becomes very unpleasant.

Besides the lack of a two-player simultaneous mode (understandable but still unfortunate), the other problem is the item-purchasing system. It seems like a great idea and almost is, but tends to skew gameplay towards sitting in one place and repetitively killing enemies just to be able to earn the strong weapons and armor that are otherwise out of reach. There's at least one spot where you can park yourself, prop a book on your turbo button, and the coins will bounce straight to you for 10-15 minutes (eventually the game stops rewarding you, so there must be a counter). I think the game might've been better served by having lower prices for the better weapons, plus a modest time limit.

(Funny thing is, when I finally did beat the game after a bunch of attempts, it was with the second-worst armor and sword. Go figure.)

But these are churlish complaints about a game so clearly made with TLC, one that's obviously trying to be "one of the good ones." And it's not quite great, but it is very, very good. 8/10.

So, in other words, you can grind. I like it. I think I might give it a try again.

You can grind, yeah -- I think I was going to use that word in my post and edited it out. But I find that it actually makes the game less fun, since it tends to either be tedious or dangerous. I had more fun once I said "to hell with it" and plowed through the game; it's probably not a coincidence that that's when I finally beat Hard.

It's a non-issue on Normal, since Normal is pretty easy once you learn what to do.

I've had this game in my collection for a while now. I bought it because I liked the artwork. But I didn't actually try the game until recently. I agree with Melf, it really does look and feel like a Wonder Boy game. And like Wonder Boy it is an excellent game!
However, I was really surprised that it isn't two player. I assumed it was and I was sure I was right because of the two playable characters. I even plugged in my player two joystick, setup two chairs and got ready to play with a buddy before I figured it out.
We still really enjoyed our time with it; swapping the joystick back and forth. It's one of those games that's hard at first but becomes very easy as you figure out what to do. It's a great ride!

I got this one because I love the arcade version. The game is quite colorful, the art is pretty nifty, music's great, and it's a great platformer. Capcom could do no wrong with this game, and Sega did a fantastic job converting it to the Genesis keeping everything in place (but changing how to get the second blue dragon's eye and hiding it well), the arcade games atmosphere is well preserved in this Genesis port.
