Classic OutRun Returns in Updated Form
Posted by Christophor SuperGuido Rick, 19 mins ago Dec 18, 2008 11:22

SEGA’s classic arcade racer returns, but this time it’s in stunning HiDef and available via PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Developed by acclaimed Sheffield studio Sumo Digital, OutRun Online Arcade, will be available early 2009.

Test your time, speed and handling ability as you race through vibrant, colourful stages and rediscover the 15 glorious OutRun courses. From the steep streets of San Francisco to the beautiful beaches of California, it’s mile after mile of unrelenting acceleration, thrills and action. Feel the kick as you put your foot to the floor in one of the 10 high-performance, fully licensed Ferrari cars as you race your way across the U.S. to a killer soundtrack.

For the first time on PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE, OutRun Online Arcade delivers online multiplayer racing for up to 6 players, with fast paced OutRun, Heart Attack and Time Attack modes, the draw to the open road has never been so appealing. OutRun Online Arcade on Xbox LIVE will feature achievements and voice; and on PlayStation Network will include trophies, voice over IP and leaderboards.

Which route will you choose on your drive for the highest possible score?

OutRun Online Arcade will be released on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network early 2009.

SEGA confirms an early 2009 release for the XBLA and PSN title; Sumo Digital taking on development responsibilities...

A month after turning up on the Australian Classification Board, SEGA has finally confirmed the development of Outrun Online Arcade.

Featuring six player online gameplay, Outrun Online Arcade also fifteen courses, from San Francisco to to southern California, together with 10 officially licensed cars from Italian automotive icon, Ferrari. Outrun Online Arcade will be the first title in the franchise since 2004's Outrun 2, which arrived on the original Xbox.

The arcade racer, in development at UK-based Sumo Digital, is scheduled to arrive on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in early 2009.

Hell yeah! Great news indeed! I was disappointed in how Out Run 2006: Coast to Coast looked upscaled on the Xbox 360 (too blurry). So hopefully this port should fix that problem. I'm getting this one from PSN so my enjoyment won't be interrupted by the RROD.

Great game. I got Coast to Coast on my PC.

They really hit the nail on the head with this one.

Cool, but I've already got both games for Xbox.

It is a great game, but I hope it is truly HD instead of just upscaled or "half-assed HD" with sharper drawn polygons but the same low-res textures.

Like Rusty, I already have both games for the Xbox.

I have the original on Xbox, but I'll buy it again since it was so good. I doubt many people still play the original online anyway.

I've got both games on Xbox as well, and I enjoy my bonus content in OutRun2, the Scud Race and Daytona USA 2 'tribute' tracks.

I agree with Joe and hope this new release is true native HD, not merely upscaled.

Hopefully it still includes custom soundtracks.

The Basement Jaxx song "Bingo Bango" seriously needs to be played while playing this.

Actually, now I come to think about it - I suppose an XBLA version means a free demo, plus easy online play and (almost) custom soundtrack support. It certainly makes it easier to enjoy OutRun without messing around with the original Xbox limitations!

I'd like to see more Sega stuff offered as Xbox Originals downloads (JSRF! Sonic Heroes! Panzer Dragoon! Crazy Taxi 3!), but this is a very nice piece of news anyway

I am not satisfied with the way current consoles support custom soundtracks. Actually, it is not the console's fault but rather the games themselves. I'd like to be able to assign my own custom music to certain game situations. For example, I might want a certain piece of music to be played only in the game menus, or I may want the menus to be quiet. I may want a certain song to be played only on the screen that shows up when I clear an area. I may want other songs to be played only in certain stages, or only a certain song to be played in stage 2, etc. With the way it currently works, the music is on all the time, even when the game is in pause. The only game that even gives you even slight control that I have seen is Test Drive Unlimited on the Xbox 360.

But the best solution is this: Awesome videogame music! Screw real bands, videogame music is better! So start making awesome original game music again, you lazy developers.

One more reason for me to get an Xbox 360. Thanks for sharing.

How I wanted that for original XBOX. Specifically for "Burnout 3".

It's definitely a buy for me, although I have OutRun 2 saved on my Xbox and I don't have a HD TV to appreciate the visuals but screw it I have credit to burn on PSN.
