    Default Herzog Zwei

Technosoft was one of the truly great videogame studios. Based in Japan, they are best known for their brilliantly innovative shoot-em-ups, their careful attention to visual detail, and their unforgettable musical scores. They hit their creative peak in the early '90s on the Sega Genesis: the masterful Thunder Force series; the surprisingly clever Elemental Master; a superb rendition of the best video pinball game ever made, Devil's Crush. And early in the Genesis' life span lay a little gem called Herzog Zwei.

I just acquired this game and am looking forward to mastering it! But the manual is quite damaged. Does anyone know of an online manual or better yet tutorial?

I found this nice review but it's geared more towards gameplay/strategy than towards getting to know the control scheme.

If you give me a couple of hours, I can make a PDF of it.

All right, so it took almost four hours. I had some errands to run. But, here it is...

Never knew that was the beginning of real time strategy. Well done review and a well
    done game obviously.

Since I've seen the CGR review, I have always been wondering why the game's title is in
German. It translates to "Lord two" in English (Lord, or something similar to that, not
sure how to translate Herzog exactly) .

I can finally understand all of the commands in the game! Thanks, Coop!

Never understood why Sega fans think this game is so good. It is so hard to play.

Because it's a good game that offers a challenge.

It's real time strategy with a twist... which is odd to say considering it basically started the RTS genre that's now dominated by C&C clones in terms of gameplay and how things are controlled. HZ has good graphics, some great music, a solid difficulty curve that never feels like it ramps up unfairly, and it has two endings for a little extra touch of replayability. In short, it's a fun mix of shmup and RTS that makes for a faster paced game, and that trait appeals to people.

Hopefully that explains why some like it.

Lots of games in that time period were (by today's standards) unplayable due to difficulty.
Look at the RPGs, look at strategy games, at simulations that attempt polygonal graphics
on the Mega Drive... Those games do seem too hard at first. That's a common issue with
the innovative titles of that era, not only stuff that came out on Sega's consoles.

Thanks so much Coop! This manual looks way better than the teared up sticky one I have. Probably also because mine tries to cram 6 languages in one booklet. And great to see it also benefits others, let's all get addicted now folks

Btw the correct translation to Herzog Zwei is 'Duke Two'. Apparently the follow up 'Herzog Nukem Fur Immer' is coming pretty soon.

Yeah, I knew that Herzog is some big-scale landowning nobility guy, wasn't sure of the
    correct translation into English.

And Herzog Nukem sounds sehr gut

Weevil, Lopson- Happy to help. Forgot how slowly my scanner works when descreening printed images. That was also part of what made it take longer. Guess maybe it's time to get a new scanner (mine's pushing 9 years now).

I would love to see someone mod this rom for new maps! I'm obsessed with the game, but have grown tired of the same all scenery. There's a sprite editor where you can change the unit graphics, but nothing for changing the scenery.

I bet they could have made this game with random base and barrier placement. If they had, it could possibly have been the greatest game ever made.

Wow, interesting! I finished the game but didn't know that. How can you see the second ending?
