Having it with limited availability makes Ristar more challenging and forces the player to enjoy the levels instead of bypassing them completely.
You really think I made it to super hard without noticing the poles? :P
Yeah it'd have to be regulated of course, I just think the poleswinging got tedious (it is rather slow to charge up) and the things look out of place in the game, like it was a late decision to use them.

Pulseman was easy because of sloppy level design, there are very few challenging enemies or obstacles in the game and it didn't seem to me like the developers took the charge move in careful consideration when making each level. The move was also hard to use properly and mostly broke the flow of the game instead of speeding it up, I remember missing a lot of jumps because of it.
Overall, Ristar is a much better game to me.

Just played it last night for the first time since I was a kid and I couldn't believe how much the level design replicates Sonic games. The gameplay is fun, albeit a bit slowpaced, but I really can't see why this game gets showered with so much praise. IMO it's incredibly overrated.

I can't believe I didn't post in this thread when I beat the game!

Anyway, the reason I think Ristar kicks ass is that the gameplay is tight, the level design is fun and there's a decent amount of variation, the music is awesome, the graphics are gorgeous (I don't know, for my money, if there's a better looking game on the entire system, although some of Treasure's efforts come close), the difficulty ramps up accordingly (to the point where I had a great deal of trouble with the final boss), and above all it's just a lot of fun to play. There's no doubt in my mind that it's one of the top three platformers on the Genesis.

    ^this.

A very mature game, excellent use of the colour palette, good level design, and enjoyable to play. One I keep coming back to for a session. Lovely game.

It's a solid Sonic knock off.

Thanks for the review on one awesome gem on the Genesis. It took me a little while to get used to how Ristar attacked and move around via swinging, but once I did I found myself having a blast. I did play it when it first came out in Genesis kiosks I came upon, I liked it then but never gave it a serious look until about 1-2 years ago. What I found was a game I stupidly didn't give much of a chance to years ago. These days I don't have a cart of it just yet, hopefully soon, but I can play it on 3 different Sega collections (Sonic Mega Collection Plus, and Genesis Collection PS2, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection PS3) until then. While it's nice to be able to play it on these collections, just doesn't feel right until the day I get my hands on either a boxed copy or a loose copy. I thought about the import Japanese version till I saw prices on it, I think the US version will do me just fine thank you.
