Thanks for the advice, folks! The real constant I've been hearing (here and on other sites) is that you need to be in the air when the game takes over the controls and the end level music is playing. I guess it takes about 3 seconds after you hit the goal sign for that to happen. The one thing I'm unsure of is whether you need to run slightly off screen first in order to do it.

I'm trying to do a score attack run, so getting those extra seconds to collect bonus points really helps out.

    THE HELL IT DOES!!!!

SONIC 1 totally blew my mind in '91. it possessed me, seriously!!
i played it every damned day and loved every unholy damned second of it!!
it's those warm memories that put it precisely at the top of the SONIC heap
in my personal book, AND THAT, dear sir, IS THAT!!!!

srsly though, 1 and 2 stand on pretty equal footing, as totally enjoyable,
    classic VGs, IMO.
they both have their unique charms, and complement one-another perfectly...

An almost timeless classic. Gets a bit annoying when you're stuck in those half pipes and cannot spin roll dash to get out of them like in Sonic 2. Other than though I find this game just as fun if not more fun now than when I beat it as a kid. I also prefer Sonic's running and jumping physics over Mario games.

Short, sweet, and to the point.

I play Sonic 1 the most out of all the games for my genny. It isn't my favorite Genesis game, and it certainly isn't my favorite Sonic game (it's my 4th favorite) but it just is so easy to pick up and play.

Played through the game from start to finish for the first time in like, nearly 15 years on Sunday. Managed to knock it out w/all emeralds in about 2 hours (I like to explore ). As with many of you, I received my first Genesis with this game (though in my case, it was a used, non-HDG Model 1 with a cart-only, NFR copy of the game bought by my dad back in Fall 1995...$65!). I'd already played Sonic 1 & 2 earlier in the '90's, but this was my first time owning the console and the game, and the surprise of getting it is still one of my favorite childhood memories. It was one of the few games that me and my older brother (by 10 years) tackled together, before he left for the Marines in Spring '96 (with our relationship being tumultous ever since then). He managed to beat the game first, while I got all of the Chaos Emeralds first.

I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. I'm curious, how many of you bought and played the game around release date? I'd like to hear some circa-1991 recollections.

I received the first model genesis with Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. I remember also getting a free sonic and tails t-shirt too. It was some time in elementary school and I remember the local store being quite busy when Sonic 2 came out. I'm not sure but Sonic 1 was probably the first game I actually tried to beat and succeeded. I think my Genesis came with a crappy controller since the dpad was a bit off. It made it easy to accidentally hit the diagonals so when dueling with the final boss when I simply wanted to avoid being crushed by moving left or right I would inadvertently go into a ball but with no momentum i'd be crushed to death. I remember really digging the ending too with Sonic running back through Green Hill Zone then jumping.

Even today when I go back to playing it, I'm more impressed by it. I actually prefer the Sonic 1 graphic style over the other games which I found made everything too plastic looking like a CG cartoon. The music of Sonic 1 is also my favourite out of the series. All this game needs is that spin roll from Sonic 2 and it would be more or less close to perfection.

oh and apparently sonic 1 has been around for 20 years since yesterday.

It's still my favourite of the whole series.

Those Chaos Emerald stages were fantastic. And actually provided a correlation to the Casino Nights Zone: Robotnik evidently has a fad for besetting hedgehogs with pinball equipment. Bright, dreamy, and utterly illogical; a shame they didn't get one more appearance.
My `91 recollection of getting to play this was 'God damn, there's going to be a system full of games this great?' Hmm.....

Total assent till that last statement. Am I the lone person who thinks the spin dash harmed Sonic? Probably. It's queer though, what with that Vectorman topic degenerating into an ACM comparison twixt it and DKC, Sonic 1 was the solidest looking game on either system.
Yes, to every doubter, it's a 10. One of very few platformers that continue improving towards the end (Starlight).

Your in-depth review is too long! Sonic the Hedgehog may be summed up by saying: AWESOME

Sonic 2 can be summed up by one word as well: OVERRATED.

I remember playing this all the time on my Sega Genesis. Sonic The Hedgehog was, and still is, an awesome game.
