    Default VectorMan

VectorMan was released in late 1995 for the Sega Genesis. Developed by Blue Sky and published by Sega, it's a unique game in that is as much a platformer as it is a shooter. The game boasts some stunning rendered visuals, which give it a look all its own and were really advanced for its time. VectorMan is set in a post-apocalyptic world (circa 2049) that has been overrun by evil and it's his job to defeat the evil scum WarHead and return the world to normal.

The game looks great but personally i felt there was something lacking on the playability side of things.

One minus is no auto fire.

I remember playing Vectorman in a store as teen when it first came out. Its first level and boss gave me a good impression. It was also fun being able to shoot up the Sega logo. I later ended up buying Vectorman 2 and beating that first and only got around to playing Vectorman as an adult.

Technically the graphics are very good although I have mixed feelings about the graphical style. I find the enemy design to be forgettable and the limited colour palette used per level makes environments look boring. Although I do really like the arctic level which I found quite impressive with the contrast in bright and shadowed areas. Vectorman himself is a cool design but considering he's mostly made of balls I wonder why he isn't called Balls-man (no I don't actually wonder about this). I actually appreciate the music a lot more now than when I first played it. It's somewhat subtle/low key but the techno style suits the game very much giving it that futuristic tone.

In terms of playability, Vectorman is not bad but it gets repetitive at times. I enjoy the levels with a lot of vertical space because it allows one to make use of Vectorman's double jump/rocket boots which I consider to be fun to play with. Some of these levels are quite vast and fun to navigate. Also being able to use the double jump/rocket boots as an attack adds another element of strategy/fun to the game. There are some morph power-ups but they are rarely present or used which is too bad because this aspect could've injected some more variety into the game. Bosses are diverse and interesting to fight against.

This action/platformer/run n gun definitely skews more to action / run and gun but the lack of autofire really tires one's hand. It doesn't make the game unplayable by any means but I think for some, it's enough of an obstacle to not persist with the game. Otherwise the controls are good and responsive. You can freely run and shoot. You cannot stand in one place and shoot in all 8 directions but for this type of game that's not much of a limitation.

It's certainly an above average genesis game although maybe not in the elite level.

Please turn the sound fx off before playing this game, because some of them are really annoying (gun shot).

Turn off the music and only listen to the sound effects instead.

I consider it a platformer and not a shooter.
