SMS cart slot on a Model 1

So I'm gonna put an SMS cart slot on my MD but I'm not sure where to put it.

I'd really like to put it behind the existing cart slot but the main reason for the mod is because I'm sick of switching my SMS adapter and 32X around, so putting it behind would be awkward as the 32X would still get in the way.

At the minute I think it's going to go on the left side of the MD where the vent slots are, I reckon I'll be able to chop down the slanted section of the vents and hinge the cut off piece to disguise the cart slot. Anyone else got any ideas about what may look cool before i start chopping and changing?

I was also thinking about adding a few more controller ports to it for multi-player gaming, but I'm not sure It's worth the hassle, what do you think?

if you have a 32X sitting in the cartslot, you will not get any SMS action going on in any way...

its going to be quite a lot of hassling, and it will probably not look good in the end either...

I have looked into what can be done to get SMS mode working through 32X but this is impossible without major switching system.

I thought I may have a problem with that, but I'm sure I'll be able to find a way around it. I had a similar problem with my SMS/GG mod, in the end i had to power it from two adapters and add an On/Off switch for the GG, but it works as i wanted it to. Maybe a similar option would work just as well for my new mod, adding an On/Off switch for the 32X, who knows, something i will look into. I'm going to do it either way as I've wanted to do it for some time, and I'm sure I'll find a way around any problems.

As for the looks, you will hardly even notice that the cart slot is there hopefully, so it shouldn't change the appearance much at all

What about adding a second MD cart port and putting a switch that determines which one is the active one? Is this feasible? I don't know which pin(s) would need to be switched, but it's intriguing. I know TmEE says major, but how major? More than making a MD into a Neptune?

For 2nd cartslot you will have to have some form of switching on most of cartslot signals so it will be messy.... same would go if you want to add PBC, you need to get most of the cartslot signals from 32X disconnected. Adding a SMS carslot next to MD one will be simpler but its still gonna be fairly messy. Building a Neptune would be piece of cake compared to that, and only thing that stops me from making a Neptune is having no spare 32X units.

Building a Neptune would be simple, as is adding an SMS cart slot. The difficulty is getting the SMS slot to run with the 32X adapter plugged in. It is possible, just not easy as TmEE says. Basically i'll need to either take the 32X out when running the SMS (defeats the object of the mod), or make the MD think that there isn't a 32X plugged in.

I do, but they aren't that pretty. I never got round to smoothing/painting it, and I probably never will now. Basically, it works on the same principle as the other mod I'm about to do, but the switching was quite a bit easier than I imagine the 32x is going to be....
