Batman Begins

I finally saw this on the weekend, and hot damn, it thoroughly rocked. An amazing reimagining of the Batman franchise. Has anyone else seen it?

I saw it and was very disappointed. It was full of plot holes and overblown action-movie conventions.

The most glaring is in the first part of the movie, when Bruce Wayne refuses to kill a murderer for the League of Shadows - he then sets the whole place on fire! Sure, he saves the main bad guy, but after making such a big deal out of not wanting to be an executioner, he surely killed several people, most likely including the very criminal he refused to kill in the first place! This is what I call stupid.

Beyond that, I can't think of many actual plot holes... I suppose what I really mean to say is that the plot is inane and punctuated by things like a big pointless overblown car chase scene that really, for me, cast a lot of doubt on Wayne's character.

The way I see it, Bruce understands that death will happen, so as along as he doesn't do the actual killing. He burnt the place down to just escape, and others happend to die.

Hell, if you think your wayt through the whole movie, Lt.Gordon really saved the town, not Batman.

No summer blockbuster is watertight. The movie entertained me more than any other so far this year, and I found no logic gap so glaring as to distract me during the first viewing. That reckless car chase did go against the stealthy Batman code of conduct, but the only thing Bruce was concerned about at that point was saving Rachel's life, and to do that he had to book it back to his cave and make the magic happen.

Hell, if you think your wayt through the whole movie, Lt.Gordon really saved the town, not Batman.

Hahaha.. that he did. Batman didn't even have to get on that train..

Regardless of all that, I thought it was a great movie. Going into such detail about Bruce's past made his choice to become Batman seem so much more reasonable than simply "watched parents murdered as boy + fear of bats = Crimefightin' Batman," or having the plot focus more on Batman's nemesis rather than Batman himself (which every other Batman had done previous to this one).

Anyways.. so clearly not everyone enjoyed the film. Oh well.

Errm.. and to anyone who has not seen the movie and stumbled into this thread, you probably wish there had been some kind of spoiler warning.. editing is in order.

I loved the movie.

Although, I was almost taken out of it right away with the kid playing young Bruce. He just didn't seem to know how to do some proper facial expressions, like being sad at a funeral, whereas he looked as if he was trying not to laugh.

Other than that, nothing really bothered me.

I liked the part where he is flying over the town, and that hallucinating stuff made him look like some glowing eyed flying demon was cool.

As was the part where Batman shoots the Doctor with the stuff, and the Dr. sees him as bleeding black liquid.

Couldn't agree more. I once thought Batman Begins was about as good as a comic book movie could be, then I saw The Dark Knight, and was BLOWN AWAY.

All except for the ending, which made no sense at all. Batman had to take the blame for the people Harvey killed? And why exactly couldn't they say Joker did it (which he did, however indirectly)

Both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were pretty damn awesome for comic book translations. Yeah sure, they both had a couple of unnecessary plot elements that kept them from being perfect, but that was more than made up for by the atmosphere they created and the sheer ambition of their plots. No longer were the movies about a random bunch of evil dudes doing evil stuff and Batman has to find and stop them (something that even the excellent Tim Burton movies were guilty of). No, this time the bad guys were integral to the plot and absolutely necessary for the story to move forward. Also, the way both the Bruce Wayne character was fleshed out this time was great, giving both him a lot more depth and the story much more believability. I'm really curious if Christopher Nolan manages to outdo himself again on the inevitable third movie.
