    Puyo Space Invaders '91

Taito's Space Invaders has grown beyond being a classic game. Over the past three decades, it has become an icon that is recognized by millions of people of all ages the world over. It's funny then, that it would take Taito so long to finally realize that it can't keep releasing the same game over and over. It seems that only a handful of the seemingly endless stream of sequels and variations that have surfaced since 1978 actually try anything new, and the release of Space Invaders '91 (Space Invaders '90 in Japan) was a lukewarm effort at injecting some new life into the classic gameplay. It didn't add much, but what's there is actually fun for a while. Read our full review and see how long you can battle the true invader, boredom, before it takes over the Earth.

Melf, I better make a spelling correction that I obviously missed, I may end up confusing someone otherwise.

    Second from the last paragraph.

could you rewrite it to say ..., or maybe it's that they thought that an overly simple port would sell millions.

Sorry for the screwup on my part, thanks for posting the review though as always!

Yet another attempt by Taito to make Space Invaders a hit, and another swing and a miss.

Couldn't Taito have just come out and said "We can't come up with a good idea for a game, so take this rehashed version of our game that was a hit 13 years ago!"

But, good review none the less.

The GBA version of Space Invader is actually pretty fun. The enemies are all different with different attack for each kind. Music and sound is also excellent.

I just played this on my emulator last night. Its a great game. The graphics kind of remind me of Galaga 88' and I like the way they made some changed to the system to keep it fresh.

I wish I new about this back in the day I would have loved to pick this one up. Anyone know whats it going for now a days?

I just saw on Amazon that they are going for around $4 + shipping. I may pick this up for some "On the go action" with my new Nomad clone.

I figured I'd post this as sort of a follow up to my review.

"I recently found some Game Genie codes for this game and being the one to like seeing endings to such obscure games I had to play this and see how many rounds it went to. I used a infinite shields and lives code and there's a total of 17 rounds, the final round has the mother ship in the background and the aliens spell INVADERS, the first wave spells INVA and the second round spells DERS, it was a nice touch but underwhelming as a whole. It would be nice to have fought the actual mothership instead but it is what it is. The game has an actual ending too stating how earth was triumphant and hopefully the invaders never return again and then a lousy credits roll. Not much but at least it's there. The rest of the rounds inbetween were mostly the same, the invisible invaders return again too but not much else to write home about. It's probably important to note that even with Game Genie this game is still pretty hard to finish because several of the rounds have the invaders starting pretty low to the ground and if they touch down then your screwed and have to reset the game since you can't die.

Well, maybe it's interesting to someone to read up on that so I'd figured I'd post that. Either way, it doesn't effect the my original score that I gave the game in the review. Enjoy!

It was an okay game, but not great by any means.
