    Default Turbografx advice

I had always been a fan of the Turbografx/PC Engine before recently buying a real one, but so far most of my purchases have actually discouraged me from collecting games for it, or the US games at least, as they are both scarce and often bland. Most of the games I want are usually the imported ones.

    So far I have:
Keith Courage in Alpha Zones (2 copies)
    Bonk's Revenge
    Tricky Kick
    Double Dungeons
    World Court Tennis
    TV Sports Football
    Space Harrier

Out of my current TG16 collection the only games that I thoroughly enjoy are Tricky Kick, Space Harrier, and Bonk. I stopped playing Keith Courage about halfway through the game because it was so repetitive. And I can't say I'm fond of sports games, they're just there in my collection. Double Dungeons is OK, because I usually like dungeon crawlers, but haven't played it enough.

I have Air Zonk and Toy Shop Boys (both great shooters) coming in the mail and look forward to them because TG16 did indeed have alot of great shmups so I usually just collect those (Rabio Lepus and Saint Dragon are also ones I look forward to buying). There are some action games that I really love on it of course, again mostly imports such as Dragon Egg.

Is anyone here having similar issues trying to get the good TG16/PCE games and what is your impression of the system's library in general?

I have a TG-16 with about 10 games. The best titles I have are Military Madness, Alien Crush, Galaga-90 and Klax. The Legendary Axe is okay, but it was way overhyped back in the day.

Overall, the North American selection of HUcard games wasn't all that great. I really didn't understand where the American NEC group was getting their ideas from, but I wasn't impressed with the launch lineup of games they were showcasing. The Turbo-CD was a step in the right direction, but North America really didn't get much of the good stuff that was available in Japan.

You can buy Ninja Spirit here for $7.50

    For US hucards;

    (Shooters)
    Blazing Lazers
    Super Star Soldier
    Soldier Blade
    Psychosis (ok)
    CyborCore (fun but average looking)
    AeroBlasters
    AirZonk
Dragon's Spirit (fun but average looking)
    Side Arms
Galaga '90 (if you're a old school galaga fan)
Magical Chase (the japanese one is hella lot cheaper. And some different graphics)
    Ordyne (very-very average)
    Raiden
    R-Type
    Sinistron (average)
    Dead Moon (average)

Legendary Axe II (side view platformer/action)
Bloody Wolf (top down run 'n gun)
    Bomberman '93 (needs not explanation)
Bonk's Revenge (best of the series)
Bravoman (fun, but only average game)
    Chase H.Q
    Devil's Crush
    Dragon's Curse
    Dungeon Explorer
JJ & Jeff (although you're better off getting the Japanese one due to censorship)
    Jackie Chan (pretty fun action/platformer)
ShockMan 2 (action platformer with shooter stages)
Legend of Hero Tonma (arcade port)
Legendary Axe (some people love it, but I think it's just average. sequel is better)
    Neutopia (classic Zelda style game)
    Neutopia 2 (same,same. Nice sequel)
    New Adventure Island
    Ninja Spirit
Parasol Stars - the story of bubble bobble III
    Splatterhouse
    Time Cruise (pinball)
Military Madness (very fun strategy game... on the moon!!!)
Tricky Kick <- love this little puzzle game.

(only average at best games - pick up if they're cheap)
    Alien Crush (pinball)
Veigues Tactical Gladiator ( slide and gun )
    Vigilante (side view scroller)
    Samurai Ghost (side view platformer/scroller)
    Chew-Man-Fu (very simple puzzle game)
Cadash (because the music sucks. Graphics are great though)

If I left any off for US hucards, then that's probably because they suck

I already bought Neutopia and Ninja Spirit, but thanks. Yeah those are some great ones and I have had the pleasure to play many of them through emulation and am trying to add these to my collection of hucards. Aeroblasters is the TG16 port of Air Busters on Genesis by Kaneko.

First, you should do yourself a favor and region-mod the TurboGrafx. With a region mod, you're open to a HUGE inventory of Japanese-exclusive PC Engine games. Some of my personal favorites on the PC Engine that never came to North America are:

    -Gradius
    -Salamander
    -Cyber Core
    -After Burner II
    -OutRun

I also like the fairly limited library of the PC Engine SuperGrafx. Out of the 5 games, I like 3 of them: 1941 Counter Attack, Battle Ace, Aldynes. But for that, you'd have to dish out LOTS of money(my SuperGrafx set me back a pretty $150 Canadian).

The best would be to get a Japanese PC Engine Duo-R. Not only can you play the HuCards(except for SuperGrafx ones), but you can also play CD-ROM games, and the PC Engine CD-ROM library is MASSIVE. You are GUARANTEED to find something you like on the PC Engine CD-ROM.

What bothers me about collecting for the TurboGrafx is that there are absolutely NO TurboGrafx items anywhere in my part of Canada(Montreal, Quebec). I did manage to pick up 2 TurboGrafx 16s and 7 HuCards locally, but had to go all the way to Mississauga to get a TurboGrafx CD(which didn't even come with a Super System Card), a PC Engine game and another TurboGrafx HuCard. What really gets me going is that I have to pay almost $20 PER HUCARD to get the damn games for the TurboGrafx, and they're all PC Engine imports from sellers in Japan. That's bullshit. Who was the drunken dumbass who was in charge of the gaming division at NEC?

It's most unfortunate the Turbografx weren't released (or even if they have, I never saw one in my life) in Europe.

I think it failed over there more than it failed over here. I remember talking to Guru Larry once from Screw Attack Europe, he said that he had a prototype PAL version of the system, and I have seen UK versions of the TG16 sale, so I know it was released in the UK, but I'm not so sure about elsewhere.

The PC Engine CD games are good, I know that, as I have original copies of all 4 Valis games for the CD system but have only played them through emulation.

It seems to have only been test marketed there. That "prototype" was likely just a regular PAL TurboGrafx. Technically there was a TurboGrafx variant in Korea as well, but like the PAL TG it wasn't anything major and also used North American HuCards.

    Some cheap good games-

    Bloody Wolf
    Aeroblasters
    Ninja Spirit
    Dragon's Curse
    Dungeon Explorer
    Alien Crush
    Devil's Crush
    Bonk's Revenge
    R-Type
    Sidearms
