    Yuck Rise of the Robots

Rise of the Robots will forever be known as a blueprint for poor game design pressed to silicon, and aspiring game designers need look no further when studying the perils of graphics over gameplay. A button-mashing nightmare that had no technique or fighting style at all, the entire experience was an exercise in frustration and usually left the player both exasperated and boiling with rage. The ironic part of all this? Rise of the Robots was ported to a zillion consoles and actually received a sequel. Note to Acclaim and Mirage Technologies: creating a second turd as an act of contrition for the first does not make things right; it makes a pile of turds. Read our full review, and be thankful that machines this bad will never be able to conquer humanity with only two attacks.

The article mentioned this game had a "huge advertising campaign". I never heard of this game. I remember most genesis commercials. Oh well, looks like the game is whack.

I think I remember seeing a lot of hype for this game in magazines, and at the time, I thought the game had to be awesome. I think the game was pushed as a sort of high-tech breakthrough of a game, and all the magazines seemed so excited about it! But I don't remember any commercials either....

Nice review! I always wondered how the game really was! The screenshots look deceptively impressive!

Ugh, this game is terrible. And to think I actually bought the game for my MD back in the day, knowing it was bad. I was mostly curious to hear how the Brian May soundtrack worked out, but little did I know that only the menu screen music was done by May (which is actually a fairly impressive rendition of The Dark).

Thanks to my youthful naivety I did try to get some enjoyment from this game, but even then I had to admit it just wasn't very fun. One playable character, sluggish controls, cheap AI that had to be beaten with cheap patterns and next to no replay value. Even the two-player mode is so horribly unbalanced that it's pretty much unplayable. Just stay away, stay far far away.

The guy at my local gameshop actually tried to sell me a copy of this monstrocity. Even at age 9 I wasn't nearly retarded enough to buy it.

But I did love the characters tho'. And the box. I always wished they'd remake this game with the characters and atmosphere intact and a good new gameplay system. That would rock.

I think the concept artwork is amazing! The idea of this game is great. But the execution was horrible! I even used the magazine artwork as the basis for a art project I had in high school. The "main" character looked cool, and if this game was done later (in 3D) by a better company, it really could of been something.
RELAX!! Pretend it's a game.. Maybe it'll even be FUN!!

The idea was indeed great, in a time where fighting games all had the "american boy" "chinese girl" "evil guy with evil things on his mind"

it was refreshing to fight a power loader robot.

    sadly the gameplay/engine was crap.

I remember playing this game when I spent the night at a friend's house that had this and thought about the hype and then realized just how boring it got after only five minutes. I forgot that the genesis version was only released in Europe.

This game looks a lot like Blackhole Assault, which was also a gigantic piece of shit. Are they somehow related beyond the "broken fighter starring stupid robots" premise that they both share?
