I dunno. As far as Metroid-style, RPG-infused, side-scrolling games go, it's basically perfect. It doesn't have a whole lot in common with the Castlevania games that came before it (apart from the title and the Big Bad), but it's still a really great game. It's just not a "pure" Castlevania experience.

I am pretty tired of the "Metroidvania" formula now though. I haven't played it yet, but Castlevania ReBirth looks to be the best thing Konami has done with the franchise since... well, since Symphony of the Night.

Don't get me wrong, it seems like an amazing game. It's just that it seems like there's so much going on with the RPG elements and the items and artifacts and all that jazz. I also don't know how to do any of the special moves as I'm playing it via an emulator.
I'm only interested in two things: Titties and beer. Ya know what I mean?

I don't really have much of a desire to play SOTN or any of the Metroidvanias. I've played the metroids and I just don't like that gameplay style. I always end up getting lost and afraid that I won't be able to finish the game because I couldn't find some stupid item in a hidden room. I don't want to have to think too much when I'm playing a game. They're supposed to be an escape.
You know who else loves Sega....

That's actually exactly how i feel about the genre. They're both amazing games, I just always get lost and don't know what to do next. Also, I hate backtracking. I LOATHE it, in fact.

Then you better stop playing.. RIGHT NOW! There's a lot of back tracking in the game. The "metriodvania" with the least amount of back tracking is PoR on NDS. Also, you don't *need* a lot of these special items and what not. It's added gameplay for when you've beaten. I.e. more stuff you can do.

I like the old style Castlevania series, but the metriodvania just have much more to offer. I'm not looking for a quick 30-60 minute run through of a game anymore. I want something that's going to last for like 20 hours or more. The NDS games are perfect for this (and SOTN on PSP). I even try not to speed through them. I rather enjoy a long game I can pick up and put down.... and not have it just be a traditional RPG. I like actions games.

OoE is by far my fav castlevania game. You're not stuck in some castle and you get to see a lot of different areas. Even a haunted house. It's also harder than any other in the series (well, the bosses mostly). And that's a definite welcome because metriodvania games are kinda easy in general - IMO.

About SCV-IV, it was awesome when it came out. No doubt about that. From beginning to end, it didn't disappoint. Bloodlines... really disappointed. I was expecting much-much more than that. Especially considering all the incredible/impressive stuff being released on the Genesis... then you get Bloodlines. It's not a bad game per se, it's just not up to Genesis standards at the time - IMO. If it was released in 1991, then I would have been fairly happy with it. Some of the graphics in Bloodlines even look a little 8bit-ish.

Which is OoE? I stopped paying attention to the names because the games really aren't that much different from the others these days, yet I still buy them all. The most recent DS edition had me get up to Dracula, but I purposely lost because I didn't want to beat the game yet as I did not have 100%. I then never turned the game on again.

Order of Ecclesia. The latest of the NDS ones. There's this magic where you can turn into a cat girl... I love that cat-girl mode haha. The attack amount is lower, but you get super fast claw attacks. And you walk on all fours

I played them out of order: PoR,OoE,DoS. I liked Dawn of Sorrow the least.

I don't even remember which one that is, and I've played and beaten them all (with the exception of Order of Excelsior).

I find the game to be a needless bitch to play on any platform, the enemy sprites are hard to see against the background & create an artificial difficulty. For both play-modes.
Bad company, I can't deny. Till the day I die.

He was talking about Castlevania Chronicles, I think.

Just saw the video. Yep, he blew it. Not just for mentioning Bloodlines for only like 30 seconds, but also for getting the facts wrong. He critizises the game for not being able to attack diagonally upwards like you could in Castlevania IV. When in fact, you can, if you choose Eric Lecarde.

Well, he is more of a Nintendo fanboy.

I wish I could edit the title of the the thread, because he certainly did blow it, as far as Bloodlines is concerned.

Also, he should have reviewed Chronicles as opposed to Symphony of the Night. I mean, if he doesn't like the Metroidvania style, he should have played one that was more in line with the previous games in the series.

I believe you can achieve the same thing with John Morris just by jumping and holding up when you attack.
