Isn't level grinding the whole point of RPGs? I always find it fun. In some games, I can walk in a circle for 8 hours level grinding.

That might be your idea of fun and I'm not criticizing, but it's not mine. Grinding and random battles were the reason I fucking hated about games like this; given it credit where it's due, Pier Solar is good with random battles; there's a balance between them.

@Jesse: I got into the whole Pokemon craze in the late 90s; whilst I think the whole series is uber shit now, I still regard the old Game Boy games as nothing but awesome.

I've played through two Pokemon games (Blue and the recent SoulSilver version, which was just an updated port of Silver, which I had only played halfway through before). Both experiences were almost maddeningly addictive, although not to the point where I was compelled to play any of the new games.

That last bit sounds like a cop-out, and maybe it is. But the two games I played we're awesome, but I sunk about 200 hrs into SoulSilver, according to the in-game clock. That's not an experience I want to invest in again. Plus, the "kiddie" image the series has just makes it that much easier to write off.

Yeah, pretty similar experience, but I got into it at the height of the series' popularity and I was a young teen, so I was really into it, collected those shitty trading cards, and even went to see that crappy movie in the cinema (that I regret alot).

The first game I played was Red, had that for about two years, played it constantly; traded with other kids at school, built up a killer squad, had loads of link battles, even brought a cheat cartridge just so I could get Mew. Then, I got Silver when that came out. I remember a friend asked me to swap Red for three of he's games; I did and that's how I stumbled upon Gargoyles' Quest.

Silver was more of the same, but amplified by 20; I did everything as before, but I loved this one oh so much more. After that, I never got a GBA and as the years when by, and I had the ability to emulate the GBA games, I just couldn't hold any interest in them; got up to like the second town and turned off; it was just too much of the same.

Maybe it's nostalgia, but I find the classic GB Pokemon games the best; the rest are just pale imitations in comparison.

I've always been interested in those old Game Boy Pokemon RPGs. They sure look great to me. I may never get to play the games, though.

I imagine it's just that with an adult's perspective, there isn't a whole lot of appeal of starting such a long process over with an entirely new game and doing essentially the same thing. I had no problem getting into SoulSilver, since that was a "classic" remake that used characters that I was already familiar with from Blue/Red and my previous experience with Silver. Maybe kids in the 6-13 demographic have the patience to sink hundreds of hours into each Pokemon revision and obsess over an increasing number of increasingly ridiculous new Pokemon designs. I don't.

I'll be happy to play through Blue or Silver again someday, but that's where the series ends for me.

Why, are you on your deathbed?

    (**ohgodpleasedon'tbeonyourdeathbed**)

Hilarious banter aside, the earlier games are definitely worth playing at least once. And since those games were EVERYWHERE, you shouldn't have a problem finding a loose copy for pennies.

    Lmao

How's the story arc and overall single-player mode of those first two titles?

Story? They don't really have one; the whole point is just to go from one town to the other, capture creatures, level them up, build up a squad and take on bosses. Rinse - wash - repeat.

Single player is addictive; balancing out your team and getting into tough battles and winning with the scrape of your teeth are the highlight of the game (for me at least).

Yeah, remember this was the game that popularized a new sub-category of the RPG genre. There's really no story. I guess it's mainly a looting-style RPG, with animals instead of weapons and armor.

It sounds pretty mundane written out like that, but the formula is rock-solid and dangerously engrossing. There's a reason why there are so many of these games.

Which saddens me, because I got into RPG's because true click & search adventure games died a horrible death around 1998.

So for me RPG's gave me the story that I craved, and even though I was forced to deal with the grinding I accepted it because I enjoy adventures.

Now though with the aspect placed more on grinding then ever before I find myself without an adventure outlet.

I might try playing one of those GBA Pokemon games this weekend, give them another chance. Not holding my breath if I'll like them or not though...
