Default What to get a degree in?

I like dealing with computers, such as tinkering, reparing and building computers, and I am getting ready to go back to classes, and I was wondering what would be the best degree for someone who likes computers. I am confused as hell and would like to know of some degrees so that I can easily narrow it down lol.

Thanks for any and all help.

Hmmm, there are a lot fewer jobs for hardware than software right now. At my school the web programs are loaded and everyone is always going on about how much money they could be making. And then they always take a piss on us about how we are going into a dead industry and 'aren't we stupid...'

Point being that for every 1000 of them there is one guy that can set up the networks and servers they need so desperately to make all that money. I think if you can look at doing something related to the internet there is a much larger future there.

My fun suggestion is: go to hair design school somewhere where it's warm and learn to surf while you get cozy with wannabe hair stylists

Computer Science sounds like the class for you.

Network Administration, straight up. After that get some classes in on programming, cause you'll get hardware in the Net Admin degree.

Net Admin will show you how to script to get things done, but it isn't true programming. It's targeted at getting a certain thing done.

Unix, unix, UNIX! Buy the books, don't resell them, keep them and love them until you can't read them anymore and your eyes fall out of their sockets.

You may have to take Cisco classes, but Unix in general will basically override them. You DON'T have to get certified, and people tell me that it raises the pay rate but everyone I have spoken to says it doesn't.

DO STUFF to experiment with what you do. If you're not obsessing over it, you aren't doing it right. MAKE your networks happen in your own house.

This is an awesome field to be in, I got that degree, about to go back for some programming. You are gonna have some FUN! Imagine, being given hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of hardware to play with. It's great, and I love it.

I'm pretty sure you can take online classes for it.

I was "into" computers before college and got a Computer Science degree. Of course I can't speak for the school you're going to but mine was mostly a programming degree so I program now. It has its ups and downs but it's a far cry from where my interests originally were.

Unless you can say without question that you like programming, Networking (as nathanallan mentioned) is probably more relevant to your interests.

I don't think building a computer is terribly hard to do. I mean, I've done it without blowing my place up and I don't have a degree in computer repair.

But I do have a degree (certificate really) in mechanical design.

I'd go for women's hairdressing or health & beauty if I had my time again. Fuck the aerospace industry. I want to hang out with chicks.

Have you thought about Electronics Engineering?

The demand is always there for Electronics Engineers, and it's a solid field for someone interested in the latest in electronics technology.
