Smile 2010 European Mega Drive Championship

Endorsed by Sega!
2009 saw 16-bit passion rage in Lisbon, Portugal, with the host team dominating the contest and claiming their second successive championship. This year the competition moves to Germany and on Saturday 2nd October, in the historic city of Nuremberg, hopefuls from across Europe will gather to battle for the honour and pride of becoming the 2010 European Mega Drive Champions. This is friendly competition at its finest with only the best Mega Drive games on show. We are now endorsed by Sega who will be offering official merchandise to the competition winners, as well as the desired winner's trophy. Come for the competition, come for the fun, come for the coffee, the World's Premier Mega Drive Championship is ready to begin!

Competition Format:
The European Mega Drive Championships are a team based event with three members per nation making up a team. Points are awarded to the team and not the individual. With five or less nations participating the competition runs as a league. With six or more nations the contest will take the form of an elimination league before a semi-final and a grand final. Games are selected by the individual members. If you live in Europe then this competition is open to you! Portugal, Germany and England all have their own domestic league to determine qualification, which are always open to new participants, but if you are from another country, just assemble three people willing to take part and viola! You have a team eligible to take part in the competition!

Game Rules:
Home Games: Each member of the team nominates three 2-player competitive games (in preference order). Teams cannot select the same game twice and individuals must not chose two games from the same series, with the Administration deciding what constitutes a "series". The home team will also decide upon the winning conditions, although the administration reserve the right to veto winning conditions if they deem the fixture will take too long, traditionally winning conditions comprise of the fastest way to play the game (i.e. No 25 rounds of Eternal Champions when 1 will suffice).

Away Games: Randomly selected by the administration. The away team must then decide which of their members plays their away games.

Administration Games: Will be chosen at the discretion of the Administration. In the past multi-player and team games have been favoured, but 2010 will also see single-player games introduced to further test the skill of competitors. The exact number has not yet been determined. Teams will select which of their members plays which game.

Semi-Final Games: In the event of six nations participating, each team will nominante a Semi-Final game and winning conditions, based on the same criteria as other home games.

Deadlines:
Participating teams have until Sunday 5th September 2010 to submit their game selections and Wednesday 8th Septeber 2010 for the winning conditions. Fixtures, including administration picks, will be announced on Sunday 12th Septeber 2010. Teams who do not adhere to these deadlines will face point deductions (take note: Team England participants - we are not having a repeat of last year!!)

Additional Rules:
Selection Restrictions: Members are not permitted to play any away title more than once. Members are not permitted to play any individual title more than twice at the tournament.

Scoring: Two-points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat.

Failure to fulfil a fixture: Each fixture a team fails to fulfil will carry a one-point penalty, with victory awarded to the opposing team.

Controllers: Members are free to use their own controllers, however, any controller with a turbo function is prohibited.

Tiebreak: In the event of two teams finishing level on points an elimination tiebreak game on Super Street Fighter 2, in which all team members play, will determine standing.

Past Competition Winners:
2009: Portugal
2008: Portugal
2007: Ireland

Finally I would like to thank Phantar who is organising this year's event for all the hard work and effort he put into this years Mega Drive Championship. He truly is a king among men.

PRAISE RAUL!

Ain't gonna be this year I'ma play on this stage. Geez.. I wished I could make the trip anyway, but it looks unlikely. The transportation tickets are expensive enough, I can't really afford much more to be only watchin'.

Oh, and screw Pedro for marginally bootin' me off the team by the slightest margin on the 2nd year on a row. :P

Why don't you bring two people with you and make a Team U.S.A? Expand our European Mega Drive Championships to a World Championship. Come for whatever reason you like, I'm addicted to caffeine that's why I mentioned coffee.

Well, if everything goes smoothly, and time permitting, we can hop on a train and enjoy the last day of the Munich Oktoberfest after the tournament.

I am definitely looking forward to this tournament, and hope that many a Mega Drive enthusiast reading this announcement will join in on the fun. When Germany first participated they neher had held a national tournament before, and we came very close to actually winning. So don't be afraid that you might not stand a chance: There's always Team England to defeat

But seriously, I would greatly enjoy for other nations to join in. Just ask a friend or two to come along and go ahead! It'll be fun! So, people from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Czech Republic, Poland, Estonia, Sweden or any other nation:You all are heartily welcome!

Damn right, Team England will be looking forward to maintaining their proud International Mega Drive status: Three tournaments played, three last place finishes.

I look forward to seeing you in the arena of battle once again, Tobias. Even if both you and I are watching as observers. I hope one day you and Lord Dilks re-match on World Cup Italia '90. I keep watching that match on the Euro 2008 DVD. What a passionate game!
