Sonic The Hedgehog 3

By: Dyson Turner | July 03, 2004

Sequels usually flop; whether it is music, movies, or video games. They are often never as good as the original and are sometimes the opposite (Matrix Revolutions). Such is not the case here, as not only is this game actually better the previous two, it expands on them even more. This game corrected every little mistake that was found in the first two Sonic The Hedgehog titles and does them one better. With more reasons to play, more secrets, and just more Sonic fun, part three was hyped well before its release and I have to say it lived up to every little bit of it. Everything that was rumored and speculated about is it made it into the game. I was very impressed with it the first time I played it and I honestly think it makes the original Sonic the Hedgehog game look like an 8-bit memory. You will have to delve deep in to the heart of Sonic 3 to fully appreciate all the things that have been thrown in as side bonuses. For instance, Tails can now fly, there is now a save feature (yay!), and even a new character.

After the events of Sonic 2, everyone thought they had rid the world of Dr. Robotnik once and for all. Sonic and Tail's plane crashed, stranding them on a mysterious island called Angel Island. Still in possession of the Chaos emeralds, Sonic runs into his greatest adversary yet, a feisty young Echidna by the name of Knuckles. Unable to avoid Knuckles, Sonic dropped all the Chaos Emeralds, which Knuckles wasted no time in picking up. Not willing to let this mysterious new foe leave with the emeralds, our two heroes follow him and the adventure begins. Meanwhile, Robotnik has recaptured many of the furry little animals Sonic calls friends and has turned them into robots. He has learned that Sonic has landed on Angel Island and knows that he may still posses the Chaos Emeralds. The evil Dr. tries yet again to take them back. Tenacious to say the least.

Sonic's sprite appears to be smaller in this version, but that is not a problem as his level of detail has vastly improved. He had been finely rendered throughout the entire series but this time it seems as though he has received an even greater level of detail. Tails, on the other hand, looks a tad bigger though, perhaps to represent the fact that he has grown some since the last adventure? Knuckles, the new character, is highly detailed himself and is a bit taller than Sonic. Additionally, some new animations have been added. For instance, Sonic has new idle animations and they look a lot better than they did before.

In addition to the improved character models, the backgrounds are more gorgeous than ever and have really taken an overall turn for the better. Everything is clear and large and there are more things to be seen this time around, which places this sequel ahead of its predecessors, if that's even possible. In the first act, for example, the grove catches on fire and it looks extremely realistic with its smoky background, burning trees, and other little things.

The music in this game is outstanding! Part two has the best music, in my opinion, but Sonic 3 is a close second . The sound effects took a turn in the right direction, as you can hear more of a distinction between what's going on in the background and the foreground. The music in some of these stages is truly remarkable, especially in the opening stage and some of the later ones, it's the type that keep you humming after you played, I reckon. One thing that I did find to be a huge error on Sega's part was the fact that they severely changed the opening theme. Although it was good, it just wasn't the same. Because of this the invincibility star's music has changed as well, I know these aren't huge differences but they are noticeable. The good music out weighed the bad, however, and I have to say that besides the opening theme there isn't anything bad about this game musically. The sounds go well with the gorgeous graphics in this game and makes it an overall enjoyable experience to watch and listen to.

Sonic 3 is for one or two players and you have the same two characters from previous installments to chose from: Sonic & Tails. They both have new abilities which greatly enhance the game. Tails for once thing, is able to fly for a short time and he can even hoist up Sonic to take him over the heads of enemies and to hard to reach places. Sonic himself has a sort of a double jump now where his spiked hair stands up and it results into a nasty attack on any badnik he faces. Also there are some new power ups, which are way better than the rather lame ones from the other games. Now you have a fire shield, which makes you invincible to fire, and Sonic can even glide with it. Then there is an Electric shield, which attracts rings to you, gives you a double jump, and deflects projectiles. Lastly, is the water shield which is like a bubble and gives you a quick jump, or if you are in water, unlimited air. There is also a new Special Stage, which though, hard to believe, is even better than the one found in Sonic 2. It is set in a 3D globe-like arena, where you have to collect a certain amount of blue spheres, seemingly with no time limit. The fact is that after a while the game speeds up, increasing the difficulty. Moreover, you still have to collect all the Chaos Emeralds to get your bonus, which is just like the one you got from Sonic The Hedgehog 2. For those who want a change from the main game, an updated vs. mode has been included. You can pick Sonic, Knuckles, or Tails to use but if you don't have the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge you won't be able to do any of Knuckles trademark attacks. You can play either a time challenge or a point challenge and there are a lot of different stages to chose from as well. Additionally, you can race and play through each stage to beat a human controlled opponent or earn a new time record.

New to this game is the save mode, which this was a very good idea. Now at the end of each stage, you can save your game via auto save and come back at any time to pick up where you left off. This is something that was much needed and even though I believe this is the shortest Sonic game, it has to be one of the toughest. There are next to nil chances of you actually completing the whole game in a single sitting. The difficulty has been beefed up greatly, making part three by far the hardest of the original trilogy. I would say that even though it may seem like it's not geared towards a younger audience, the new challenge is definitely a plus for experienced gamers.

This is an absolutely fabulous game, without a doubt. This has got to be of the all-time classics for Genesis and one of those games you won't put down for a long time. My only real gripe was that the opening music could have been better. But with all its good qualities, like the ability to save, more characters, and better graphics, I'll let it pass. Considering the fact that this game has more packed into it than any of the others and that you and a friend could already play this for hours without any sign of boredom, it gets even better when you pop in Sonic & Knuckles. Not only can you relive the adventure as Sonic you can also now do it with Knuckles. Sonic & Knuckles also adds more secrets as well. Some would argue though, that the whole "lock-on" premise was incomplete and I would have to agree with them. If you use a cheat code, for example, you'll see that there are 3 levels that you cannot choose. That was something that I felt should have been added to make this game more complete. Aside from this minor detail, Sonic 3 is definitely a game you should not pass up, especially if you have Sonic & Knuckles.

Zadoc 10 August 18, 2010 Perfect 10. The only way this game gets better is by adding Sonic & Knuckles.

JoaoAraujo17 10 July 12, 2010 The Saga continues, the most complete game of the Sonic saga! Sonic 3 & Knuckles were a 20/10, Sonic 3 is only 10/10 ahah

cowboyscowboys 9 June 26, 2010 I love the size of the stages in this game, they are a huge upgrade. Sonic 3 went the whole 9 making this a complete sequel. All the new power ups etc.

RetroGamer93 10 April 19, 2010 Believe it or not I don't like the idea of a save mode. Still with that aside, this is a VERY good game. I love it! But to me, this with Sonic and Knuckles is the ultimate Sonic adventure!

jango52577 9 April 07, 2010 Sonic 3 is my second favorite in the series after Sonic 2. Sonic was indeed an innovative title mostly because Sega went back to the drawing board yet again and tweeked the Sonic formula until they had it nearly perfect. Bigger stages, the save feature, new Bonus Stages, a better 2P Mode and a new character. Nearly perfect? Nearly finished...to be continued in Sonic and Knuckles...

speedle 10 February 08, 2010 I remember getting this as a kid, the only thing that made it better was adding the sonic and Knuckles cart! my god i'll never get the awe i felt as a kid playing this game. One of my favourite games even to this day.

findout5 10 November 21, 2009 Did it ever get any better than this? I don't think so!

Devil N 9 October 25, 2009 A great game to be sure and a more than worthy entry in the Sonic franchise. Lock on Sonic & Knuckles and it gets even better. Sonic 3 just seems to suffer from what I call second sequel syndrome: it tries to do too many new things to set it apart from the previous games, and some of those things just don't work.

Dr. Robotnik 8 September 28, 2009 I like this game alot, but it's missing some of that special magic that the first two Sonic games had. Some of the levels are just not as fun or engaging, like Hydrocity zone and Carnival Night zone. New Character, Knuckles, adds nothing to the proceedings, other than to spring a couple of forgettable traps.

mreza 7 September 26, 2009 i'am a sonic loverZ! i hate this game becoZ the stage is too short only"6". but,in sonic 3 you can save game and now there's new character:knuckles!!!

paulojr_mam 10 September 01, 2009 best sonic alone ever! the best sonic ever is sonic 3 and knuckles, but it's not alone, 'cause is like... two games. incredible the improvements pver the other two games!!! they made, for me, the first adventure playable with different charaters were every charater has it's own and really different gameplay.

jsmit 10 July 10, 2009 sonic got his new look with a smirk of excellence mastering techniques only he can master. Off the wall playing showing what a classic is worth. combine with sonic and knuckles, you go hyper sonic on they a$$.

nomad83 10 June 19, 2009 This game is impessive. It saves your progress and is highly addictive.Nothing beats the joy of beating a level your stuck on.Also you dont have to work your way back to were you are after you stop playing and you dont have to type in those passwords. All you have to do is click on your profile and this feels really great knowing that this game is over ten years old.

knicksfan89 10 June 10, 2009 it continues to get better! could this be the greatest game ever released?

FunkyFranky80 10 May 22, 2009 The succesfull Sonic Formula once again, with better graphics, and,at some points, memorable music tracks (jackson!?) For me,with Sonic 2 & Sonic CD the best in the series. The Hydrocity tune from Act 2 is absolutely awesome.

hipposticks 10 February 11, 2009 It may be slightly less memorable because it wasn't groundbreaking like Sonic 1 and 2 were, but that can't be held against it. Top gameplay, graphics and music once again.

Rob Ascough 10 December 30, 2008 Yet another continuation of the formula from the original Sonic, and another perfect gaming experience. There are fewer levels this time around but all of them are absolutely enormous. The graphics are slightly improved once again, with greater emphasis on the animation of the characters. Being able to save your progress is a wonderful thing. More of the perfection that made Sonic so popular.

vintagegamecrazy 10 November 30, 2008 A great Sonic game, this was my favorite game back then and far better that S&K for sure.

Jamal 9 September 15, 2008 For me, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the pinnacle of Sonic the Hedgehog gaming (the new 3D Sonic games do not interest me). The gameplay in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is fluid and easy-to-maneuver, the levels are huge and fun to explore, and to top everything off, the music is perfect (Ice Cap Zone and Launch Base Zone are my favorites).

SonicPsycho 8 September 13, 2008 You can only truly appreciate this game when it's combined with Sonic & Knuckles, because then it's absolutely awesome.

Jesse813 9 August 30, 2008 Great game and it you can Save this time too! one of the best Sonic games out there!

Patrick_ 7 August 26, 2008 Nice try but no cigar IMO. Levels *look* cool, but they're almost pointless. Not enough interaction. I also didn't like the major change of Sonic's sprite, but it's not too bad. And what's with the two-player mode? Pointless. Sonic 2's two-player mode is superb. They should've done the same with Sonic 3.

McTom 10 August 22, 2008 Best Sonic game so far. Even better combined with Sonic & Knuckles.

MrMatthews 7 August 09, 2008 I don't see why this is considered the best of the Sonic games when it is certainly the worst of the original three. The game is unforgivably short after Sonic 2 (which had much better-designed levels and music). Worst of all, they changed Sonic\\\'s look and rewrote his theme music! A pox on thee, Sonic Team!

suppafly 8 January 27, 2008 I liked the first levels a lot but the later levels are kind of boring and I lost itnerest...to this day Ive never finished sonic 3. But I did finish sonic 1 and 2 and loved those!

TmEE 10 January 22, 2008 Its THE ABSOLUTE BEST Sonic there is on MD

BlackHoleSky 9 January 13, 2008 While Sonic CD is the best Sonic game, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the best on the Genesis. Combining the cartridges is the only real way to play, otherwise you are completely missing out. Tons of well-designed levels, great colors, awesome music, another new character, 2 player mode, 3 super characters and 2 hyper characters, amazing graphics for the time and finally a save feature. This defined Sonic.

BlowMyCartridge 9 December 18, 2007 Why can't Sonic breathe underwater?? Constantly searching for air bubbles to stay alive was so irritating. Mario can breathe underwater. And he's an obese plumber.

J woman 10 November 27, 2007 This is by far my favorite Sonic game ever. And combined with Sonic & Knuckles made a even more of a fantastic game. I can play Sonic 3 over and over & never get bored.

spiggysparks 10 November 17, 2007 I enjoyed the faster levels of Sonic 2 more than this, and of course alone this game is way too short, but Sonic 2 is the best Genesis game... The save feature came in handy when combined with S&K.

Alianger 8 November 14, 2007 This game was a step in a different direction, which resulted in Sonic getting his feet stuck in the mud and having to actually Walk around, exploring levels like in some friggin Action Adventure/RPG! :( The music was't as hot as before either. Still it
