View Full Version : Dreaming in 16-Bit: Sega-16 Video Review Series

I've recently begun to dab into the world of YouTube video making, and the result is a new series of video reviews narrated by yours truly. This is a work in progress, and the first episode is kind of rough in some areas (I forgot to mention that Bloodlines is called Vampire Killer in Japan), so please have mercy. And yes, my voice does indeed suck. :p

So here's episode 1: Castlevania Bloodlines.

I need to do it so it doesn't sound like I'm reading. Hopefully, I should get better as I go.

Don't be so hard on yourself, my voice sucks too. :D

*Up to 3:40*

Heh, I gotta say. I've really been enjoying listening to this. Your voice is just fine, easily better than mine (sob). Only problem I can see is you need a better microphone. If you ever hope to be on the Blast Processing Podcast, you need a good mic man! :p

Oh yeah, don't be afraid to include a little music here and there while you're talking. It can immensely help set a mood or direction with your narrative.

*finishes video*

Very well done video review man, ESPECIALLY for a first video. MUCH better than my first. You should definitely consider making video productions a part of Sega-16, even if you were the only guy making them. I've never actually played a Castlevania before (outside a little of SCIV) but this game looks really fun. :D

After it was done, I was thinking about how it needed some background sounds or music. I'll definitely work to incorporate that in future installments.

Thanks!

You will definitely get better as you go. With that said I hope you do more. :D

Oh yeah, I rated and subscribed.

Want me to post my thoughts on the episode from here in the video comments too?

Great job, O creator. I really did like your voice, although it sounded like you were reading at times, that can be hard to avoid. I think it's an awesome start for a Sega-16 video series, and might I add, you picked a great if not perfect game to kick it all off.

Kudos.

Ken, I love your writing and your voice is fine, but you did kind of come off like narrator for a kid's story . . . which made it all the more disconcerting when you started the rough languange at about 6:30.

I guess my son won't be listening to this particular bedtime story.

Awesome review, of my favorite game on the Genesis. The LeVar Burton comment was a joke due to the scripted tone in his voice. It's still truthful though. PBS broadcasting acid-flashbacks.

On a side note though.

Melf, you're an English prof.
I'm ignorant to the 'laws' behind it, I've burned many a braincell since my serious ventures in academic English; was the proper context used in your phrasing of "It was automatically assumed by my friends and me," at :45? It works & is probably right, but it sounds 'wrong' to my ears.

Wrong enough to get me to 'think' about it at least. :p

Melf
02-22-2010, 08:04 AM
It's grammatically correct, though perhaps I shouldn't have used the dummy subject there. A lot of people say that kind of phrase wrong by using "I" instead of "me." "I" is a subject pronoun, so it's not used here (just remove the compound subject and say "It was automatically assumed by I," and you'll see how it's wrong).

But now that I've heard the piece so many times, I'm finding a lot of stuff I would have liked to have phrased better. Something to consider for next time. And I got the Reading Rainbow vibe too, lol.

Ok, that was awesome. Ken, your voice really fits the review and has just the right amount of monotone and manly depth to make it awesome. :ok:

That was very good! You have an excellent voice, very well suited for this kind of stuff. Also, I agree with you that the classic, pre-SOTN Castlevanias are better (except for Aria of Sorrow on the GBA, that one's awesome)

How did I miss these? I had no idea you were doing videos. These are very enjoyable. I think they should be featured on Sega-16's front page like the articles are. They'd just be under a new category: Videos. They are official Sega-16 fodder, after all. :)

Guntz

Video reviews are probably too demanding of professional standards to allow other people to make them for Sega-16, huh? Like the written reviews and articles?

I gotta sit down and watch your new review Melf. It's been a long time. :D

I was pretty turned off with Todd's Adventure in Slime World which to me seemed to be one of the worst games ever made (not that I spent a lot of time with it), but Gaiares is definitely awesome !

Constructive criticism:

Use a better microphone. The one you're currently using seems to be rather high pitched. Very unpleasant to listen to on headphones.
Shorten the intro. A lot. 33seconds is way too long.
Increase the volume of the game's audio / music so it's still audible in the mix, even when you speak.
Increase the volume of the game's audio / music even further when there's longer sections during which you don't speak.
Record stuff from real hardware. Much sexier. :)

I originally wanted to do one entry, I had it already scripted out, but just when I was about to start I was swamped with workload, so I never got around recording anything. Personally I feel that recording and planning out such an episode takes up more time than researching and writing reviews and features, so eventually I abandoned my original plan. I may revisit it some time later, but for the moment I don't intend to.

It's one of many running Raul Julia jokes. He was a big deal in the early days of Sega-16. Not much interest anymore though.

The joke in my signature, is that a Raul Julia game for Genesis would need a cartridge that big to hold all the jawusumness. Note the Game Genie used to fit the giant cart in the Genesis. :p

As for the latest episode, I can't say I ever knew of Sega Visions back then. Seems interesting, but I'm not sure if it would be as interesting to read coming from a modern perspective of someone who hasn't read it yet, as opposed to when it was all new and exciting(and having the nostalgia of having read it when it was).

Perhaps off topic:
You don't seem to have a general thread for the channel.

I was listening to the 2nd Musings vid, about the console wars, when you brought up that some guy mentioned a lack of quality games on the Genesis in '94. So I took at look at releases for both consoles for that year, according to Wikipedia, that were exclusive to either console in the North American region, that seemed worth noting:

SNES:
The Adventures of Batman & Robin
Brain Lord
Breath of Fire
Demon's Crest
Donkey Kong Country
Equinox
Final Fantasy III
Firestriker
The Flintstones: The Treasure of Sierra Madre
Ghoul Patrol
Illusion of Gaia
Mega Man X
R-Type III: The Third Lightning
Super Bomberman 2
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!!
Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

Genesis:
Battletech
Beyond Oasis
Castlevania
Contra
Crusader of Centy
Desert Demolition
Dynamite Headdy
Ecco: The Tides of Time
Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition
Mega Bomberman
Mutant League Hockey
Shadowrun
Skitchin'
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic 3
Streets of Rage 3
Tinhead

With no agenda or any conscious thought to it, I wound up writing down an equal number of games(17) on both lists. Like I said, that was exclusive to the North American region, so it's not taking into account great multi-platform titles that were better on one or the other, or exclusives to the European or Japanese regions.

'94 as a year was far from a "downfall" for Sega. The Whole DKC-magic-bullet-for-Nintendo thing is severely overstated as well. When DKC sold it's best, November(~500,000 units) and December(absolute best at ~1,500,000 units) of '94, Genesis games as a whole still outsold SNES games.

Personally, I don't know what can be done to stave the ignorance off. People believe what they want to believe, and then, with confirmation bias, they become the video game historians that people take at face value.

Anyway, I just wanted to get my thoughts out on that. I can't believe anyone would seriously think '94 was a poor quality year for Sega.

Dude, DKC is THE reason Sega no longer makes consoles! Everyone knows that! ;)
