- Subterranea

Both make extensive use of Select button
I played Sub Terrainia quite a bit and do not recall use of the Mode Button.
Could you refresh my memory, what was its function?

Also, I know this is not strictly the correct forum, but might we also include a sublist of Sega-CD games which utilize the 6-button controllers?
It would be helpful to have a single list which details all games that make use of 6-button controllers.

Off the top of my head I can only think of:
Battlecorps
BC Racers
Eternal Champions Challenge from the Dark Side
Fatal Fury
Pitfal Mayan Adventure
Samurai Shodown
Soul Star

Assault9

World Heroes
VR Troopers
King of Monsters 2

EDIT - VR Troopers supports the 6 button but for some strange reason doesn't use the X, Y or Z buttons despite being a fighting game.

I'll add:

ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron

,but I'll also add:

ALL of my Genesis games interphase (play) with my official 6-button controller. ;)

Pretty sure LHX Attack Chopper is a bogus entry in this list. The game does support using a second controller for additional functions (targeting, firing certain weapons without selecting them first, and using time compression to speed the game up), but I tried it with a 6-button controller today (both with and without a second pad plugged into the 2P port), and the extra buttons didn't do anything.

The manual doesn't mention anything about 6-button controller support either.

WWF Royal Rumble, and WWF Raw.

Even though it doesn't need it, I'll add that Ms. Pac-Man requires holding Mode down as you start the game, if you use a 6 button with it.

Turrican 3

Mega Turrican :)

Greatest controller ever. every Genesis game is a 6 button pad game some just use more of it's buttons :D. Biggest piss offs Earthworm Jim 2 not making use of the extra buttons and Mortal Kombat's not having a pause function.

My only complaint about the Genesis 6-button is that the mode button barely feels like it's there. If it maintained the size of the original 3-button and had shoulder buttons, I'd consider it perfect.

I really like the 6 button controller. It's ideal for small handed people like me that have a bit of a problem holding the original 3 button controller.

Jesus, you must be the smallest person alive.
I was a 13 year old small kid when I got my Mega Drive, yet the 3 button pad worked perfectly in my hands.

Are you.. vertically challenged?

Can.. Can we see a video of you trying to play a game with the original Xbox controller?!! O_O

I've been using the 6-button controller recently and I have bigger hands. I like the 3-button controller too.

How is the size of the 6-button compared to Saturn controller?

Which Saturn controller? The Model 2?

Yea model 2. The model 1s are mutated things that aren't comparable to anything.

The Model 2 Saturn controller is more ergonomic than the 6-button Genesis controller. The Model 2 controller is a little taller and form fits your hands better, instead of a boomerang shape. I also like the textured surface on the Saturn controller. The triggers are very comfortable.

As far as buttons and D-pads go, they're both the same apart from the Start button. The Genesis controller has a hard plastic Start button with a membrane underneath. The Saturn controller has a soft rubber Start button with a contact pad on the bottom.

For me, the wireless MK-1629 is bliss: The feel of the textured black plastic with distinctly formed under-grip, the refined size and dexterity is complimented by a more substantial weight attributed so by ingeniously engineered "AAA" batteries, the d-pad remains relatively unchanged and comfortably familiar juxtaposed to the six button configuration now nicely acclimated along a smooth inner plastic periphery as the start button is stylishly implemented within the design schema itself, the mode button that I never really use is now in the modernized shoulder-position, state of the art wireless technology.

Did I mention I can fly Sonic through Hydrocity Zone using Tails by flipping a switch instead of physically having to get up from my couch and picking up the second-player controller? Brilliant!

^ That is some fancy wording Lync! I have just one question for you:

I'm not fancy enough to own a wireless Genesis controller. Maybe if I have some Grey Poupon, I will obtain enough fancy to suffice.

Haha - I promise I'm not this nerdy in person, and certainly not nearly as sophisticated; had to embellish a little on how sweet I think the wireless controllers are. Now, if we were talking about hang-tabs there'd be absolutely no phony or fancy filler words to describe how I feel about them. Cutting is a crime.

Well, when I drive up next to you in your Rolls Royce in my Mini Cooper while you're playing Genesis with fancy wireless controllers, you know what question I'm going to ask. I expect you to have Grey Poupon when I get there.

I wouldn't bank on that - unfortunately I'm the type who likes pineapple and ham on his pizza; people with such unusual tastes would be the last to be packing some Grey Poupon, haha.

In regards to controllers, one that has always caught my eye but could never quite grasp how well it actually performed was the Saturn 3D-pad. As I've never experience it first hand (no pun intended), the design of it seems totally intimidating.

Many of the 32X games utilize it as well.

Doom, Star Wars Arcade, Metal Head...just off the top of my head.

Good point there! SEGA CD games too. Wing Commander is one off the top of my head.

Shadow Squadron makes great use of the mode button also; the third-person perspective that becomes available makes it play like an entirely different game rather than a simulation.

Here are a couple more games that use 6 button:
Shinobi III
Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits

Shinobi III requires a code and two controllers. Highlight options, hold mode on controller 1 and up and c on controller 2 and then press start on controller 1. Williams Arcade Greatest Hits doesn't detect it automatically and it's activated by pressing mode during gameplay on Robotron 2084 or Defender II.

Any JP only games that use it? I'm guessing Gouketuji Ichizoku (Power Instinct) uses it.

It sure does.

The Japanese Rockman World has the 6-Button logo on the back but doesn't actually utilize it in-game. As for other J exclusives, theres DBZ, but as far as I remember it only uses A,B and C in game, along with the MODE button for quick movement. I think.

Did Power Instinct not get a US release on Genesis?

BrianC

No US release on Genesis, only SNES in US.

Edit: I have to check, but I think Great Circus Mystery uses 6 button too. If I remember correctly, it lets you use the x, y, or z buttons to change costume.

doh, didn't see it on the list. Was thrown off by the "the".

If you want Sega CD games too, add WWF Rage in the Cage to the list.

Also the 32x WWF Raw, but I wonder, do any 32x games not utilize the 6 buttons?
