View Full Version : Shmup Contests: Official Thread

I hope to make this a staple and have the help of Sega-16's shmuppers in doing so.
Shmups aren't restricted to those on 16 bit or even Sega machines.
Pretty informal, but some timeline is needed to help out those contestants with less free time than others.
Thanks in advance to everyone who participates and otherwise contributes.

Inaugural Competition Shmup = Summer Carnival `92 Recca (Famicom).

Nice suggestions, but Kolibri can't be done. It has no scoring system.
32X alternatives could involve After Burner or Space Harrier. Maybe even Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000.

(1) = The Coop and I have briefly discussed parametres. Fire Shark and Truxton were two examples of his on problematic games due to their looping: a loop limit would have to be imposed, but the problem with these is how restricted their scoring system becomes w/o looping (Fire Shark's is virtually exponential based on bomb stock). Not to rule them out, just a head's up. Of course I'm game for Fire Shark whatever the rules.
(2) = Dreamcast and other later gen games will be harder to coordinate due to restricted emulation. I do second Giga Wing, and raise you Mars Matrix (or a 1 lv challenge in Mars Matrix), but we'll have to see how many DC owners we can corral. Shikigami 2 is also on DC, along with Trizeal (Radirgy's out for PS2).

And what kind of scoring flexibility does R Type Final have? Any at all?

Good to have you.

I'd totally be in if we did a competition for Space Harrier or After Burner!
Excellent news. We'll definitely cover the Sega classics at some point. Perhaps after the competition's attracted more regulars: it'd be sad if only six people showed up for Space Harrier.

So uh, what's the next game for this competition, since Recca ended yesterday?
Give us a push, you're the victor.
There's been lots of Vapor Trail talk here lately...nevermind what I deem the game, it's a contest.
Fire Shark I am for except that I have beaten the first go-through not too long back; but if nobody perceives that as self favouritism FS will be fine. Likewise for Bio Hazard Battle though I just played it (might be too soft on Normal anyhow).
Since we've got a few more members poking about the thread than I'd expected perhaps it's not too soon for Afterburner or Space Harrier.
But again, victor's prerogative till we get fed up with your winning.

There's nothing wrong with the game. It's pretty straightforward, doesn't have a complicated scoring system to scare people off, and it's a good game. Guess people just aren't up for shmuping.

Official Notice:

It appears it's time to consider extending the contest length. This should help widen the field for a few obvious reasons. I'm thinking 10 days. (14 still sounds like too much time to forget about the contest in). Any thoughts?

Also, let's encourage a check-in sometime before the contest's end for everybody. I admit I haven't done this myself regularly but in Darwin's case it's because I didn't think an early withdrawal notice very useful or cheery.

My Gekirindan score so far is level 5...nevermind the points, I can get further than that on 1C and may just complete it.

Next Game will be either Space Harrier or Afterburner (II?). Please pipe up if there's any reason not to choose one for multiplatform's sake (ie Saturn/32X/Genesis discrepancies).

It also has tate and 'routed' yoko (ie full screen hori with compensated controls)---though I can play somewhat w/o that controller compensation.
I just burnt it and it came out poorly due to my disk's speed and the iso (not a bin...) And it's still better than the PS2 version. Fuck! Just when I'm trying to like the PS2 again. The PS2 sounds like MIDI compared to the Saturn game and it lost the story captions---not much there, just a bit more than Kingdom Grandprix has after race, and to the point rather than personal, but just something to notice rather than a serious complaint). And Gekirindan has a great soundtrack.
The wobble looks like crap but is no harder to play with than the Taito Legends shitscreen.
I died on the winged sub boss with the pink beam because the beam animation's different from the PS2 version's (which isn't the PS2's fault).

As far as I know, it's Gekirindan until at least January 1st... unless something's changed.

But yeah, arcade and Sega Saturn versions would be good (they're basically identical). The 32X version should be all right, too. Though it does run at half the fps of the other two, I believe the scoring is still the same in terms of enemy count, destructible objects on the ground, etc.

I'm going to have to stick with my earlier eleven hundred thousand score, just been playing too much of this game w/o save state practice. I don't want to see lvs 1 - 3 for a couple months. Stupid of me, I should've switched to Saturn earlier, the PS2 runs it at 150% speed--though it yields another bomb, which deficit on the Saturn threw me off. If somebody posts a particularly tonic score before the night's out (and I see it) I might have it in me for a last go but I squandered an enthusiastic session testing the advantages of the red sidearm--which are none. Despite the rest lv 3's music is better on the PS2. Plays much better on Hard but unfortunately I don't. Anyhow Gekirindan should serve as proof 10 days will be more than enough. The scoring is also highly static with an odd, irritating twist towards (?) # of hits to down an enemy, as Shario seems always to outscore the others by some 3% despite a seldom even shootdown rate.

We haven't played anything close to a bullet hell yet. Nor am I itching for one, I suck at them. MAME is a convenient way of playing many Saturn and PS titles w/o actually owning them, along with better versions of games badly ported to consoles--or well ported long ago, such as 1942, which was beyond the NES's hardware means to fully recreate. Check out Flying Shark, that would be a cool one for us to play, though I do think a hori would be good for variety.

I was talking about Space Harrier. However, it seems a bit odd that you don't like arcade shmups, yet you own ones for the Genesis, etc. Up until bullet curtain shmups became popular in the mid '90s, shmups on the 8-bit and 16-bit consoles played like the shmups in the arcades.

I say go for Bio-Hazard Battle. At least it's a bit different from what we've been playing.

It's official. Default # of lives and no continuing. Autofire On (if that's even optional).

I would say let the best man win, but honestly I'd prefer if it were me.

Since you've come to visit, Agostinho, why not stay and play some BHB with us?
You might as well take part in this before it's too late, the world is gonna end in 2012 you know....

This was a terrible suggestion. Like ingesting a burrito through my nose. I lose---116,something something zero at stage 6.
Where did you two dig up all those points?

The Coop, Kollision, curryman: your opinion of this game? The retrograde sloth was a very poor idea given all the slowdown and random scrolling. Apart from that it's pretty cool, but damn I'm just getting worse at shmups and this one rubbed it in.

OOO! Does this mean I won? That I vindicated myself after my pathetic, "barely got a chance to play" Space Harrier score?

Kollision

Where did you two dig up all those points?
By milking the cannon fodder that comes with bosses.
I just figured it might be even better to do it with a weapon that doesn't home on anything, this way you avoid damaging bosses too fast (it's hard not to).

The Coop, Kollision, curryman: your opinion of this game?
A good one, definitely unique. And a good choice as well, contrary to your vision.

Boss milking. Blowing up the other ships or debris that comes along as you're fighting the bosses, while trying to avoid killing the boss, for as long as you can.

The Coop, Kollision, curryman: your opinion of this game?

I like the game. It's not revolutionary or anything, but it's fun, visually well done with a rarely used theme in Genesis shmups (bugs), and solid controls/hit detection.

Well, since it's been over ten days, I'm guessing that makes this contest done. So, for the next game, we'll go with one that keeps coming up...

Fire Shark for the Genesis (not arcade or any other port).

- Rapid on
- Hard
- Three lives
- Maximum of two loops (this thing loops, if memory serves, ten times). So if you clear the game twice, pause it at the very beginning of stage 1 on the third loop, and that's your score.

okay, had a few first credits tonight

396.920, stage 4

I got distracted during that power-up shower and died stupidly.

Fire Shark is a sleeping bag. I gave it my first whirl the other day and after some initial hiccups (which as always are quickest cured by a shot of gin) I managed to get rolling. A few levels rolled by. And then I mentally fell asleep.
The problem is the weapons to enemy ratio: the Fire Shark has a 95% kill effect simply from holding down the fire button so it's just up to whether that last 5% can kamikaze or shoot it, but basic manoeuvring obviates the majority of that 5% so in reality one just sweeps about from corner to corner like some hypnotist's watch waiting for that lively <2% to break through.

edit = 1,100,000 and change early in to lv 6. This game is fuck all boring. I can't pay attention.
