Thanks to these Usenet posts (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/rec.games.video/MRb_kDN2Q7Q/x3nMm3POCiEJ) and USPTO listings (here (http://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=74167720&caseType=SERIAL_NO&searchType=statusSearch), here (http://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=74152119&caseType=SERIAL_NO&searchType=statusSearch), and here (http://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=74168449&caseType=SERIAL_NO&searchType=statusSearch)) we can see what was available for the Game Gear in April of 1991. Which game do you prefer?

Definitely Castle of Illusion, it's a solid platformer that's pretty much just as good at it's 16-bit brother. Even though it may be a Master System port, it's still quite a solid game, something the Game Gear doesn't really have a lot of.

Castle of Illusion all the way.

Well, this poll certainly went as predicted.

I played a ton of Dragon Crystal but I cant say its a great game. It had really nice graphics but it was a bit weird. I dont think I ever finished it and wasnt sure how to.

Screw you guys, Columns is the best.

Castle of Illusion.

If the launch window we're using was wide enough to include Revenge of Drancon, I'd choose that.

You're right (http://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=74152119&caseType=SERIAL_NO&searchType=statusSearch), but I don't have clearance to edit the poll. If one of 'the mods' would be so kind as to add 'Revenge of Drancon' to the poll, that would be much appreciated!

If we're including "launch window" then Shinobi is my choice by far. As for the ones in the poll, I'm tempted to pick Castle of Illusion like most people but the SMS one is slightly better. Columns, on the other hand, has enhanced graphics on GG over the SMS.

Considering that the Japanese version (http://sega.jp/fb/segahard/gg/soft.html) was released on April 26, I'm not sure that it made it here during April.

True, although launch window can mean the first few months depending on who you ask.

Psychic World is a pretty good game. It's one of the better platformers on the system, and I like how it plays differently from so many other GG platformers, way too many of them aren't that great...

Castle of Illusion.

It was the best early game to show of the system against a GB anyway. It had great graphics and animation and it was a solid game too, for many people this is a better game than the Genesis version.

Yes, but at least for this thread, it'll be April.

Sadly, one of the designers of the original MSX version didn't like the Game Gear and Master System conversions (http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/Interview:Tsunetomo_Sugawara).

Castle of Illusion

I voted for Castle of Illusion. Loved The Genesis version and actually was very surprised on how well the Game Gear conversion turned out.

BTW, Anyone remember "World of Illusion?"

I chose psychic world because it's the only game gear launch game i've played.

I don't have an MSX, so the console ports are all I've played, but they're pretty good; I like both. Each is quite different -- the SMS one has much worse graphics, but larger, longer levels, while the GG one has the best graphics of any version by far, but has pretty short levels -- but both are good... sure, the MSX version sounds interesting, but the console ones are good too.

Columns.

Afterall it's SEGA's response to the popularity of Tetris (that's being bundled on Game Boy).

I still find it funny how Castle of Illusion is literally a SMS ROM in a Game Gear cartridge, nothing was done to make it more suitable for the Game Gear's smaller screen.

Not true. Various color changes were made and the text for the stats bar was moved to the bottom of the screen. There might even be changes to the level layout and enemy placement.

G-LOC, I know it gets little love, but I was wowed when a friend brought it over. I actually had a ton of fun with that one, and loved a two player linked dogfight.

Minor changes. It's still running at SMS resolution, is it not?

Not on a stock Game Gear. ;)

My point is: it wasn't a copy/paste job; they made some changes. Whether or not those changes benefit the Game Gear is subjective.

I voted COI but have to admit I thought Columns would be a bit closer to it in the poll.

I like Dragon Crystal and Psychic World but Castle of Illusion, no contest.

It's a tough choice between CoI and Columns, but CoI is a platformer that stands toe-to-toe with the likes of the Mario Lands. I'm one of those who thinks it's a better game than the MD version, more complex level design. I don't mind the pick up and throw mechanic either, it has more level design opportunities than the marble throwing.
