Oh hey, another side-scrolling shooter released for the Dreamcast. What a surprise... [/sarcasm]

The pedigree behind the Soundtrack sounds pretty cool, though! May be worth it just for the music alone...

It's better to have another side-scroller shooter than to have no new game at all. Also, It's great to see that Huelsbeck was involved in this project.

I'd like having the option of buying a digital copy though; 150,00 bucks + taxes is a little too much for me.

"look, it's another bloody shump"

Quit the crap at once!
How many shumps come out a year?
I bet not nearly as many as those FPSs, 3D shinygrafx adventures, online multiplayer racing and RPGs, etc.

THANK GOD IT'S ANOTHER SHUMP

Yet I know for a fact this game should be pummelled to death.

what are they supposed to make? shooters are easy and cheap to make. what do you expect? a new rpg that costs millions to develop? it's a miracle there still are dreamcast games being released

it's a commercially dead platform, that's why

more

there's a difference in "who would buy an FPS made for the DC" and "who would buy a shump made for the DC"
shumps do not require state-of-the-art grafx to be considered top notch
shumps don't sell
shumps are mostly labors of love and objects of desire for a few
shumps are niche, fans will gravitate towards the platform that offers the games

What happened to those platformers that people were trying to get funded via Kickstarter? Did they not reach their targets?

@OT: Not throwing my comments in regarding the genre. The game looks good, and I hope you shumpers enjoy it.

KitsuneNight

yes and ?
there are other 2d genres out there

beat em ups
scrolling beat em ups
2d platformers

all of these more or less fit in to the trappings you describe

bultje112

there's no real niche market for any of those.

For those interested in FPS , there are lots of Half-Life mods for the Dremcast; there are also lots of Beats of Rage mods.
The Toe Jam & Earl 3 beta got ( finally ) leaked and there's even good Neo Geo emulators being constantly improved for the DC.

Aside from Neo XYX , Ghost Blade and Pier Solar HD which are coming soon.

For a "failed" console that got discontinued in 2001, that's not too bad...

I prefer the look of NGdev Team's Neo Geo games like Gunlord and Neo XYX to their DC specific stuff. This and the original DUX just look like flash games to me. Sturmwind really got everything right.

EDIT: Apparently this isn't from NGdev Team. Don't I feel like a fool. I agree with the others that I find it hard to get excited about new shooters being released because I suck at them so much. They're not really made for me. I'm glad someone is still making them though because you'll never see big companies making them anymore, short of a few download only releases.

They can have my money when they diversify their tastes. As most of you have already said, there's already enough shoot 'em ups, and it's time for something different.

If you don't like shoot 'em ups, don't buy it. No one's making you buy a game in a genre you don't like.

Heck, I suck at shmups, so I don't really buy them (though I respect them in many ways and would probably buy them if I was any good at them -- I really wish I was good at them for various reasons). However, more power to anyone making any new games if they are of good quality, no matter the genre.

Why do people always say that? We're not against shoot 'em ups, we're simply stating that we would like to see some other genres explored in the future. It's great to see games simply being released at all for the system!

I apologize. Web forums do make it hard to detect nuance in someone's statements sometimes. It's very easy to misunderstand someone saying "oh great, not yet ANOTHER shooter" for being someone who thinks shooters are crap as opposed to someone who just would like to see more variety in general.

Oh, it's no problem. There are so many fanboys/girls out there and they make so many stupid remakes. I certainly know where you're coming from.

The gameplay in Redux is excellent but it is low res (320x240, like Neo Geo or Mega Drive) unlike DUX and DUX 1.5 which featured high res graphics (in 640x480, like most commercial Dreamcast games). I will recommend the game but only if you are a fan of classic 16-bit style shmups. If you are new to these games I would recommend DUX 1.5 Jewel Case edition (http://hucast.com/product_info.php?info=p31_dux-version-1-5-jewel-case-edition.html)as that is the very best Hucast release to date.

Rene Hellwig of Hucast assured to me that Ghost Blade will again feature high resolution graphics - which is nice to hear as the screenshots they've published so far looked fantastic.
