We often hear talk about "games saving consoles", but what about Halo?

Yeah, this was probably around the time that bungie was trying to pitch its idea for an exclusive maybe?

That magazine entry is merely just a rumor, the picture is very old production artwork before the game was finalized and destined to be on Xbox.

Still, games like Halo and GTA III would have been very cool on Dreamcast. Personally, I would have preferred there be a port of TimeSplitters 1 to Dreamcast. It was a PS2 launch game, so it could possibly have made it onto the DC.

Didn't Halo start out as a Mac exclusive?

I think so, but it seems Microsoft had no issue dumping tons of money on prospective exclusives for their new DirectX Box.

At that point halo was...rather rough. Not quite what it ended up being on the xbox...I doubt what's there is anything but a rumor mill. It's likely Bungie was already talking with Microsoft at that point in its development.

If anyone's interested in the history of Halo, Bungie made a, um, documentary on their own game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtG6--4r_qk

It's an hour long but pretty interesting, goes through the whole history of the game's production and how the multiplayer was just a last-second addition that almost didn't make the cut (which makes sense considering the weapon balance...)

Indeed, many people think Halo was originally started and designed for the original xbox. Bungie was a Mac only dev for a while.

actually it was a mac/ps2 game (at least at one point...might have started as mac-only, then mac/pc/ps2, then xbox exclusive)

I doubt they were ever actually in active development on the PS2 (or DC) version. I would bet that they were developing it for Mac/PC, and planned to have someone else make a PS2 port. That's what they did with Oni. Come to think of it, I wonder if a Dreamcast port of Oni was ever in the works.

The Dreamcast rumor blurb probably came about because there was a time period when magazines just assumed any game in development for the PC was getting a Dreamcast version.

I think it was Mac-only (RTS), then Mac/PC (maybe still RTS?), then Mac/PC/PS2 (shooter, not sure if 1st or 3rd person), then Xbox only (FPS).

But yeah, Dreamcast versions of GTA3 and Halo would, obviously, have been pretty hugely important. But getting those would have taken at minimum a Sega with enough money to afford to pay off the company to make it, I'd expect...
