I loved SS, although I know a lot who don't. It's good mindless fun, like Tetris. But yeah don't think I could beat that score... or could I?

I prefer "spin-offs" (pun intended) like Sonic R and The Fighters. Spinball just doesn't do it for me, it is too far removed from the rest of the series - Sonics aesthetic is too different and he controls like a plummeting seagull. Otherwise Spinball isn't too bad I guess. I may try to best your score at one point.
