View Full Version : Wireless Dreamcast Controller: Anyone here have a Dreamconn?

Everdrives and wireless controllers are just too great, and with my USB-GDROM on the way, I was looking to pair that with a wireless Dreamcast controller. I hate how Doc's Dreamcast controllers look and presumably play, and the Dreamconn looks great albeit rather price-y. Anyone have one of these? I see a good bit of info when it launched a couple of years ago, but I'm interested in how they hold up.

A wireless Dreamcast controller?

I'll have to look into this. Hopefully someone responds, my interest is now piqued.

This is what put me off in getting one. I haven't checked recently but at the time I was interested in them they were up to v4.0 and were going for in the range of $150.

I had a few wireless PS2 controllers purchased from way back, and sometime last year I got myself one of those PS2 to DC adapters. So that's what I settled for.

That's a Joytech PS2 wireless controller. I didn't notice any lag. It's not bad, it does the job, but if I'm ever able to find one of those dedicated wireless DC pads and at a lower price point (not very likely, I guess), I'll pick one up.

My bulky original "phat" Logitech wireless controller, the sticks don't work with that adapter. The d-pad and buttons work fine, though.
The slimmer (newer) Logitech wireless pad doesn't work with it at all.

That's not a bad setup. Looks like the controller and the PS2-to-DC device would run me about $60. Thanks. It's something to consider.

It looks neat with the VMU on the side. I always like the concept of the VMU but the fact Sega didn't make the batteries rechargable by default was a bad, BAD, oversight.

Nothing is worse than Sega's boneheaded decision to make the Saturn's save memory battery-backed. I would gladly have paid $10 for a memory card to avoid losing my saves every year.

Even the Sega CD didn't do that.

Looks very neat

I wonder if you can invert the action buttons and the movement for games like Quake 3 Arena. If that is an option, I'm getting one immediately.

I have one. Marvellous. No inversion though.

:D One day, they'll make that perfect controller for you! I know a left hander who had an Atari, she just swapped hands and got used to inverting all directions. She was knackered after the Commodore days and just gave up on gaming.

It's so funny how only recently I managed to get passed the camera axis inversion in windshield-bug-view (over the shoulder). Thanks to the Gears of War series.

But the whole PC style keyboard button layout on the Dreamcast controller is just awful. I know I could have so much more fun if there was a way. And this time, I think it may just benefit everyone, though. :)

I agree, there were so many options there hardware wise that would have made so much more sense. Even something like a supercap with a small little charging circuit would probably have been fine.

That battery is very annoying. As for the DC controller, it just feels like it's missing two extra buttons to me.

I guess not the cheapest of options taking into account the combined cost of the adapter and wireless controllers and receiver.
But since it does work on the Dreamcast, I thought I might as well include it here.

Speaking of wireless DC controllers.

Looks like they've also got a DC VGA box there,

That's pretty cool! I hope the build quality and overall functionality is good. However, the Genesis Stereo Audio S-Video Cable made me laugh.

Yeah...how are the pulling that off? Unless they are using the capacitor resistor trick to filter out the color from the composite signal to give them a separate Chroma and Luma? I've tried this and while it did work when I did it on my TG-16...the colors weren't right and it had horrible checkerboard patterns all over the place. Especially on reds. So...I'm very curious how they are making s-video out cables for the Genesis/Megadrive?

Those boxes are pretty tributes to the original products.

The ideal DC controller solution would be one similar to that PS2 controller that has swap out modules so you can customise it to your liking. I have a couple and have used them on the DC with the adapters Thierry showed, but it would be nice to have the following:

1) Two extra face buttons for macros / assignments.

2) Two Extra trigger buttons for the same.

The screen could double up to be used for assigning these functions.

You could make any configuration possible and be able to use more modern control schemes for those more awkward games.

Someone throw one together for me please!
