I'm still going to say that The Castle is the system's killer app. There aren't that many games to begin with, but it's a seriously fun little action-adventure title, and probably better than the later Castle Excellent/Castlequest sequel for NES.

The version of Chack'n Pop on the system is really quite good -- much, much better than the crappy MSX and NES versions. I also like Ninja Princess, cryptic though it may be.

Haven't played The Castle much (if at all), but I put some serious time into Castle Excellent a long time ago without realizing it was the JP version of a NA-released game (Castlequest), and I liked its style of gameplay.

I remember liking HERO, Penguin Land and the aforementioned Ninja Princess.

Champion Billiards, C-So!, Gulcave, and Girls Garden are my favorites. Along with a driving game or two, Monaco GP or Zippy Race.

Zoom 909 is pretty nice too.

...we're just going to list about every licensed game at this rate.

I can't imagine the average gamer knows the answer to this one. The console sold 150,000 copies, and Sega's expectations for it were 50,000. Believe it or not, that's the reason why they stuck to the hardware market as long as they did.

As for games, I haven't tried many myself. It's kind of to the Master System as that was to the Genesis, in regards to similar software. That said I've tried Dragon Wang, which was a sort of Kung Fu Master kind of game, but with slight adventure elements(including grabbing keys, but it's so damn challenging I never figured out how they were used, as you start to travel back to the left, once you fought the bosses off going right).

I like Black Onyx probably most of all, just because it's a RPG.

i literally got an SMS everdrive mostly to explore this library - Ninja Princess & Penguin Land stood out, wanted to love Goglo 13 more than i did! also that weird Yuji Naka one was fun for a bit.

I have always loved H.E.R.O. on every system I've played it on since first owning the Atari 2600 original.

I am also a fan of Monaco GP and Chack 'n Pop too (which is pretty much a Bubble Bobble prequel)

HERO's probably my top SG-1000 game. I don't think it's better than 2600 original but the remade graphics and Quartet-ish music are nice.

I feel Star Jacker also deserves a mention. Vertically scrolling shooter with an interesting take on how it handles your extra lives.

A great sg-1000 game would be the sega conversion of Pitfall 2 & Zaxxon for being well made ports.

Dragon Wang just cuz of the name alone. You'll have street cred for telling your friends, enemies, your client in a brothel, whoever that you have a Dragon Wang.

Castle Excellent is also on MSX, is flip screen like the original Castle, and plays much better than its NES/FC counterpart. The Castle is definitely an excellent game, but it's also on MSX.
