Rep given! That thread was really a dick move... But trolls find that funny and very relevant. LOL

Thanks for rep a few months back. (Didn't see how to check rep for a while.) It was that pic of the car falling to pieces. My car still sucks but at least the muffler system is reattached now, and I've rediscovered my love of mountainbiking, including for the daily commute to work and back.

    Thanks for the Rep
  6. It sounds like the same sick bastards run both of those places.
  7. I forgot to reply to this. Yeah, they didn't teach me crap about research in undergrad or grad school. It was frustrating actually, they showed me the scholarly article databases and told me to find stuff, that was their teaching of research. Then when it came down to it, "historiography" was more important to them than history. That is, they wanted me to know all of the important scholars for any particular topic and what their main points were, they didn't give a crap if I understood history or had a strong base of primary accounts ready to give a defense. I just needed to know that some dude said something first about something else. This was Sam Houston State University, where their History department is their strongest area next to Criminal Justice.

Bullocks, I still get nauseous thinking about it.
  8. Yeah, I think the shock to me was that they kept giving me As for producing reviews (with a few rejections) but never once asked me to memorize said reviews until my comprehensive exam. By that, I mean the actual exam was the first time they made mention to me that I should be able to regurgitate everything I've ever read. Before that they were apparently satisfied with my understanding of the field (history) as a whole.

What you are describing sounds like something a more prestigious university would pull, which would only result in students popping out of the process earlier than I did.
  9. Thanks for the rep. And yeah, the academic disease started to wear me down well before the I "did not graduate" with a 3.9 GPA from grad school. Apparently I should be able to recite 2-3 page book reviews for any book I have ever read from memory without warning.
