I'm sorry to bump this oldish thread, but I have a request.
Could someone come up with a better region bypass code for the Japanese version of Thunder Force IV? The old one does work, but you have to turn the Game Genie off right after the region check (at the "Sega" logo), or else the game locks up within the first couple levels. Then you have to turn it back on to bypass the region check again if you win or run out of continues. Bump the GG the wrong way, and it freezes because you bumped it. Not to mention, five lines of code to get around it seems a bit bloated. Frankly, just being able to leave the Game Genie on would be a greatly appreciated improvement.
Here's the old code from Trevor Wilson...

The first code bypasses the regional check, but that causes the checksum check to fail (which will give you a blank screen). The second code (the master code) bypasses the checksum routine.
Can someone make a code for Michael Jackson's Moonwalker so that it plays the Thriller music if the song is still in the REV O1 version of the game but disabled?
Well, I tried a number of things, always leaving the Game Genie turned on. Here are my results...
- It bypassed the region checks at the start up, and it didn't give me a problem upon going back to the region check after killing off all my guys and not continuing.
- It freezes up when you reach 80,000 points on the Ruin stage, which is when you earn a 1up.
- It freezes up if you touch the 1up on the Strite stage, and when you beat the boss (which puts you over 80,000 point, when you earn a 1up).
- It freezes up when you beat the mid-boss on the Daser stage (which puts you over 80,000 points, when you'd earn a 1up).
I didn't go any further, as the problem had pretty much become clear. It works until you earn your first 1up. Whether you pick it up as an icon, or you earn it with your score, the game freezes the moment you get it.
Thanks for your help thus far, Tony H. Here's hoping that this 1up issue can be resolved.
Wow, this one is really strange! I have never run into a game that had this problem. At first, I thought you must have had a bad cart, or a dirty Game Genie/Genesis... but after lots of testing on my emulator, I was finally able to recreate the problem.
I *think* I've got a code that will fix the problem, but I've only tested it on one level (I took me forever to get to the end of just that one level).
I made two assembly traces... one with the game freezing, then another without the game freezing. I then compared the two traces and was able to figure out where the problem was.
You'll need to use 3 codes total...

P.S.
Baloo, I'll see if I can figure out that Moonwalker code for you.
Sadly, we've encountered a new problem.
When a stage ends, and you get that "TV turning off" effect, I've encountered a black screen. It only happens during that transition, and it seems to be random stages that do it. I've had it happen at the end of stages 3 and 4, and on 5 twice. It's always happened with the Game Genie left on.
I tested my TF4 cart by turning off the Game Genie after the region check at the Sega logo screen, and the game ran fine from start to finish. When I started a new game and left the Game Genie on again, it went to a black screen between stages again. So my TF4 cart isn't the issue. But, I also know my Game Genie isn't busted, because TF4 is the only game I own (US and import) where such oddities happen.
Could TF4 be doing checks or something that the Game Genie codes just can't get around during gameplay?
I found what you were talking about, and made a new code to fix it.
Try these 4...

I know it's not your cart because I get the same problems on my emu. To be honest with you, I'm not sure what's causing it. Hopefully, this 4th code will be the last one you need. Let me know what happens.
Well, I have some results.
I played through the entire game leaving the Game Genie turned on, and there were no freezes, no black screens, and it's gone through the region check multiple times in one sitting without issue. I put the master code in first, then the three other codes in the order you have them listed. I want to say "YOU FOUND IT DUDE! ROCK ON!", but I feel I should play through the game a couple more times before I say it definitely worked (just in case it was a fluke). So instead, I'll say this...
You may have found the sequence that works. I'll play the game a couple times tomorrow, and let you know how it went :)
Glad to hear that.
One other thing... Since you've got space for one more code, do you want any GG codes like infinite lives, don't lose weapons when you lose a life, start with all weapons, etc? Sounds like you're good enough at the game that you don't need any codes, but just thought I'd ask.
