I also have a NTSC-US 32X (unmodified), but I don't think you can set the region on the 32X, I think the region is always set by the Mega Drive.

I know that we can turn ON/OFF the Paprium "sound chip" on the Options menu. I can ear differences in the music between the ON and OFF...
