    Megadrive Slap Fight

When you think shmups, you think Toaplan. It's been virtually synonymous with the genre for years and has released more hits than you can shake a power up at. A few of its earlier titles got home releases but were confined to Japan. Slap Fight made it to U.S. arcades as Alcon but its Mega Drive port never did, and gamers were once again forced to import. While it won't send anyone into a frothing frenzy, Slap Fight is a competent little game whose special mode alone makes it worth the price of admission. Check out our full review and see what you've been missing.

I think this is a pretty great port, even though it came out pretty late.

Looking at the rom for this game and Snow Bros, it has a "(W)" country code, which means the game is not chiplocked/region protected. The fact there is no protection, makes me wonder if Tengen wanted to give this a release outside of Japan?!
The smell of scorched oil hangs in the air as a premonition of danger, while the engine gloriously shouts its war cry...

Throughout history, suspicion has always bred conflict. The real conflict, though, resides in people's hearts. This conflict has just begun.

I wish this game were cheaper as I'd love to own it. Just playing the ROM I can't help but be pulled in by the Gradius-style music which makes me feel like I can do ANYTHING! So inspirational. I wish Eliminate Down would have good music like this.

The box art for this game is waaaay ahead of its time, in my opinion.

I have to own this simply based on the fact it's called "Slap Fight".

Slap Fight really is the template on which Toaplan based its shmup's 'till the end. The homing missile power-up, for instance, would later be transformed into those awesome homing lasers found in Tatsujin/Truxton I/II and Fire Shark; also, the way you usually end up fighting one stage's boss well into the next, new stage, is also very Truxton-esque.

On a side-note, I'd say that the original version completely fulfilled me : I had played it extensively on Commodore 64 and was happy to get a cleaner version. On the other hand, while the MD version is better gameplay-wise, I have to admit that Yuzo Koshiro didn't impress me that much with his score. The reason: it was a complete and quite litteral rip-off of the Gradius scores, without any kind of sonic inventions for which he was famous. Still great, but derivative. Oh well, what do I know?

Overall the game is cool, but no riot. Still get Truxton for a faster... more intense update.

Oh damn it, I thought I reached the end towards Sega games over the $200 price range, but as if I would pay that much for this game, other than the good music and gameplay, I see it as a pretty generic shmup, that didn't really push the Mega Drive.

Hmmm, wonder if I should get Truxton now.

Truxton is definitely in my top 5 genesis shmups list. Super addicting game play.
