I've played a lot of great Sonic hacks. Most of them have been mentioned here, but "Doctor Robotnik's Critter Capture" is another favorite of mine. You get to play as Robotnik/Eggman and catch cute animals with a net! He controls very differently from Sonic, which is impressive.

There are a few Mario hacks out there that are also really top-notch. I'm thinking of two in particular:

*Super Mario: Star Road, a hack of Super Mario 64 by Skelux. Most Mario 64 hacks have very poor level design, but Skelux has made a full set of polished courses. It's fantastic. If you like Mario 64, you must play it. Unlike other hacks, it may be reasonably played without save states.

*Newer Super Mario Bros, a hack of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. This, I think, might be the best ROM hack ever. It's packed with interesting level ideas, and it has lots of new (and ORIGINAL) graphics and music. It features a new powerup (the Hammer Bros. suit) and a completely rewritten world map system. I think this might be better than some of Nintendo's own efforts at a followup to the title.
It may no longer be the `90s, but there is still time for Klax.

I've been playing Super Mario 3Mix with my brother, and I'm having a blast. It was made by the guy to made the Super Mario 3 Disassembly, so there's tons of awesome stuff in this hack. Nice custom music, level design and gameplay elements. Definitely check this one out, and don't research it because there are lots of neat surprises.

NES. It's a Super Mario 3 hack. Probably the best right now. Mario Adventure is another fantastic Super Mario 3 hack from way back in the early 2000s. The author of that hack seems to be working on a new hack after all of these years.

I would have gone for NES Mega Man series and SMW hacks, but I don't know what's fairly balanced out there. The total conversion hacks I did go with were usually ones I've known of for a good while.

The Sonic Winter Adventures hack was one I just randomly took a crack at, thought it sounded interesting reading about it at romhacking, but it seems pretty good. I spent a good while with it, never got past that first boss(the one in the 3rd act of the first zone, I beat the other other 2), so I don't think any of the save functionality kicked in, if it does before you beat the game.

Update: Apparently it's just a 4 stage demo, but it's good, and challenging, for what it is.

Another thing is that I'm not particularly fond of fan crossovers either. A Castlevania game with other NES characters for enemies, for example, isn't my kind of thing. I like the game/series to still be itself. Even minor ones, using fan games as examples, like the Cody sub-boss in Streets of Rage Remake, or Lion-O in the He-Man Beats of Rage mod, irks me a little.

Edit: Also, I'm not sure I'm familiar enough with a lot of games for total conversions to begin with. If I need something new, there's games I haven't played before as well. That's why I usually like hacks that add something to a game, rather than redesign it.

Would Mega man Minus Infinity even count as a hack? :V
Considering it's such a total conversion.

If so. I'll have to pick that one c:
Just has so many interesting boss battles and mechanics.
